Last northbound trip over the old Portal Bridge a few days ago. In less than a month, the new bridge will increase efficiency on one of the busiest stretches of passenger railroad in North America.

After stopping at Conway, it was on to Berea, where I’d be dodging a band of thunderstorms for most of the afternoon. For being one of the best railfanning spots for mainline action east of the Mississippi, the traffic was light, with a total of 5 trains over the course of 6 hours. Even the locals remarked at how quiet it was. Still a neat spot, though.

I've been pretty bad at keeping up with this account, so it's time to get caught up a bit... First visit to Conway, PA in July 2025 provided a westbound manifest with a decent string of Amtrak hoppers (likely loaded in Birdsboro, PA) and a number of interesting cars.

Classic Yellowbonnet action around LA...

While in the Los Angeles area, I set out with the goal of capturing the BNSF El Segundo local job as it's the only train to traverse the entire remaining portion of the famous ATSF Harbor Sub. As a bonus, it had been running recently with one of the few remaining ATSF Yellowbonnets on the BNSF roster.

Arriving at Watson Yard, two trains were working, and one did indeed have a Yellowbonnet GP60. After a couple of hours of switching, the crew hopped out at the yard office and returned a few minutes later with paperwork in hand. The chase was on!

Designed for fast freight service, the GP60M was only purchased by the Santa Fe Railway, and all examples now reside with BNSF. Initially used on hotshot intermodals, they have since found a more humble life as switchers and local freight power in the Los Angeles area. Watson Yard serves as BNSF's main general freight yard before entering the Port of LA and once served as the end point for the ATSF's busy Harbor Subdivision from downtown Los Angeles (now replaced by the Alameda Trench).

In this video, we catch two GP60+GP60M pairs working the industries around Watson Yard including one of the last surviving "yellow bonnets" in BNSF service.

New model up for grabs on the High Iron eBay store!

This Athearn Genesis EMD SD75M has been professionally custom weathered with a very high quality finish. Model is lightly used and features DCC/sound installed (I believe Soundtraxx but not sure). Model runs smoothly without issue. Minor cosmetic imperfection visible above the cab windows (not terrible) and some handrails are not fixed into their bases (easily glue-able).
