Sue Mitchell – District Commissioner, New Forest Hunt Pony Club

Some of the most important roles in the horse world are built quietly through community, encouragement, and simply showing up for others. Sue was nominated for the way she helps young people grow in confidence through her work within the Pony Club.

What began through supporting her own children gradually became a much bigger part of her life, creating opportunities for others to learn, achieve, and feel they belong within the equestrian world. For Sue, horses teach far more than riding, they teach resilience, teamwork, responsibility, and self belief.

Spending time with Sue, what stands out most is her genuine care for the people around her and her belief in giving something back to the next generation.

I've shared Sue's full story on my website (link in bio) and its well worth a read.

Jess Errington – Groom for Harry Meade

Some of the most important roles in the equestrian world happen quietly behind the scenes. Jess was nominated for her hard work and dedication as a world class groom, caring for horses not just physically, but mentally too.

For Jess, the connection comes from the quieter moments, learning each horse’s personality, understanding the sharper and more sensitive ones, and building trust through consistency, patience, and care. It is work that asks for resilience, long days, and endless commitment, but also creates partnerships built on genuine understanding.

Spending time with Jess, what stands out most is the way she shows up for the horses every single day, believing that if you are on their side, they will be on yours.

I've shared Jess' full story on my website (link in bio) and its well worth a read.

Ellen Berchner-Nolan – Dressage Trainer

Some people teach riders what to do. Others help them truly understand the horse beneath them. Ellen was nominated for her ability to teach classical riding principles in a way that feels engaging, accessible, and genuinely enjoyable.

Her journey with horses began with freedom, long rides through the woods on borrowed ponies, before growing into a lifelong passion shaped by competition, learning, and a deep respect for the trust horses place in us. For Ellen, good horsemanship has never been about control, but about communication, patience, and learning to speak the horse’s language.

Spending time with Ellen, what stands out most is the way horses have shaped not just her riding, but her outlook on life, teaching resilience, acceptance, and the importance of staying curious.

I've shared Ellen's full story on my website (link in bio) and its well worth a read.

Helena Whiting - Veterinary Physiotherapist

Some people work with horses. Others seem to truly listen to them. Helena was nominated for her instinctive ability to understand the horses she treats, often recognising that what is labelled as “difficult behaviour” is really a horse trying to communicate pain or discomfort.

Her work is built on patience, trust, and creating a space where horses feel safe enough to let go of what they are guarding. Rather than asking what is wrong with the horse, Helena believes we should ask what the horse is trying to tell us.

Spending time with Helena, what stands out most is her quiet ability to see beyond the symptoms, creating trust, understanding, and real change for the horses in her care.

I've shared Helena's full story on my website (link in bio) and its well worth a read.

Jade Short - Yard Manager

Some people bring more than hard work to a yard, they bring warmth, calm, and positivity. Jade was nominated for the way she supports both horses and people, creating an environment built on kindness, patience, and genuine care.

Through working with horses, she has learned resilience, empathy, and the importance of earning trust over time. For Jade, horses are not just part of her work, they are part of what keeps her grounded, constantly teaching her to slow down, stay present, and keep learning.

Spending time with Jade, what stands out most is the quiet way she makes both horses and people feel safe, supported, and understood.

Rebecca Stojak – Equine Solicitor

Some connections with horses begin so early they feel woven into who we are. Rebecca was nominated for giving a voice to the silent horses and for the pro bono work she does supporting equine charities.

Raised in a life centred around horses, she has always understood that true horsemanship is built through trust, responsibility, and paying attention to the smallest details. What stands out most is her belief that horses are deeply emotionally intelligent, and that the relationship we build with them should always come before the sport itself.

Spending time with Rebecca, it becomes clear that her passion extends far beyond riding, it is about advocating for horses and ensuring they are always heard.

I've shared Rebecca's full story on my website (link in bio) and its well worth a read.

Alice Peternell – Dressage Trainer

Some people work with horses. For Alice, horses are simply part of who she is.

She was nominated for the calm and patient way she supports both horses and riders, including an autistic and dyslexic pupil, with a level of care and understanding that quietly runs through everything she does. From Pony Club days to training in Holland and being long listed for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, horses have shaped every part of her life.

But beyond the achievements, what stands out most is her consistency, showing up day after day with patience, kindness, and a deep respect for the horses in her care.

I've shared Alice's full story on my website (link in bio) and its well worth a read.

Debbie Hill – Sports Psychologist

Some people work on performance. Others help us understand ourselves. Debbie was nominated for the way her work supports riders far beyond the arena, creating deeper understanding between horse and human.

For Debbie, horses are more than athletes or partners. They are teachers, showing us how to listen, how to be present, and how to understand what sits beneath the surface. Through her work as a counsellor and sports psychologist, she helps riders find balance, confidence, and connection, not through pressure, but through awareness and trust.

Spending time with Debbie, what stands out most is her belief that horses do not ask us to be perfect. They simply ask us to show up honestly.

I've shared Debbie's full story on my website (link in bio) and its well worth a read.

If you’d like to support the work Debbie does in helping riders build deeper understanding and connection with their horses, please follow, like or share this post.

William Potter - Farmer and Fell Pony breeder

Some lives with horses are shaped quietly over generations. Bill was nominated for his lifelong dedication to breeding Greenholme Fell Ponies and for preserving the traditional way these remarkable ponies are raised on the Cumbrian fells.

From leaving school at fourteen to work as a horseman, to breeding over 1,150 registered Fell ponies across nearly seventy years, Bill’s life has been deeply connected to the land, the ponies, and the traditions that shaped them.

Spending time with Bill, what stands out most is his quiet sense of responsibility, not for recognition, but for protecting the future of the Fell pony and the knowledge that surrounds it.

I've shared Bill's full story on my website (https://www.emilyhancock.co.uk/blogs/news/bill-potter-farmer-and-fell-pony-breeder) and its well worth a read.
