Heartbreak in the final for Pilkington U13 Madrid last night in the Liverpool FA County Cup Final.
After an incredible cup run to get there, the lads looked set to bring the trophy home, leading 2–1 going into the closing minutes against a strong Maghull Youth side. But football can be cruel at times, and a late equaliser took the game to penalties.
What followed was pure drama. Both teams holding their nerve from the spot before Maghull eventually edged it in sudden death penalties.
Despite the result, Pilkington can hold their heads high. The character, fight and togetherness shown throughout the game was outstanding. You could see how much it meant to every player, coach and supporter there on the night.
It was also an absolute pleasure to be invited along to capture the occasion on behalf of Pilkington FC. Games like this are exactly what grassroots football is all about. Passion, emotion, pride and moments these lads will remember for years to come.
Finals are decided by the finest of margins, and this one could honestly have gone either way.
Massive respect to both teams for putting on a fantastic advert for youth football.
