Burnley from Above

Burnley from Above Burnley from Above is a new page looking at Burnley from a different angle, from above.

Using drone photography, we want to capture and share some of the best things about our Lancashire Mill Town, and maybe some things that need improvement.

For today's 'View from Above', well I didn't think we would be getting these pics as the weather today has been atrocious, but I waited and at 7pm it was nice and sunny so took the drone up Towneley to get some pics of the circus (Pinder's Circus) bathed in sunshine.

What a lovely setting for the circus this year, and in the background of one of the pics you can see Towneley Hall bathed in late evening summer sun.

'View from Above' today looks along the length of Trafalgar Street, from it's junction at the mitre towards the junction with Manchester Rd/Centenary Way.

The photo was taken on a sunny day last week (26/5/2026) and the drone was approx 80m high.

You can see the Leeds & Liverpool canal winding up the centre of the pic and the majority of the Weavers Triangle too, including the newly refurbished Newtown Mill to the left.

In the distance are Tesco and Burnley Wood and Brunshaw estates and Towleley Park beyond those.

For today's 'View from Above' took a stroll down to the Mitre junction to have a look at the land behind and adjacent to the Chorley Nissan, which I believe will be a new Aldi (I think I read to replace the small one near to Halfords?)

This pic was taken this morning (26/5/2026) and I notice some earth has been moved from what it was like last week, so maybe some ground work preparation is taking place.

Love to see the traffic management plans as I am sure some must have been submitted to the council!

'View from Above' today is from much closer to home, in fact it was 90m above my house looking towards Pendle Hill.

It's a lovely day and you can also see the lovelu green space between the houses on Melrose Avenue and Kinross Street.

Coal Clough Lane is the raod at the bottom and Cog Lane is just visible to the left.

The M65 cuts through the centre of the pic and you can clearly see the leisure complex at Crow Wood to the right.

Another interesting 'View from Above' this time we had the drone almost 50m above Duke Bar looking up both Briercliffe Road and Colne Road.

In the centre is the former Duke of York pub, which I think is now flats, and behind that is St Andrew With St Margaret & St James Church.

Branching off to the right is Briercliffe Rd which in turn has Thursby Rd veering off to the right. You can clearly see Stanley Mill on Cleaver Street.

The branch of the road to the left is the continuation of Colne Rd with Barden Lane veering off to the left.

Today for 'View from Above' we are up Towneley, well 70m above the car park of the small diner as you turn onto the road to Cliviger (Ingham's Diner I think its called).

You can see Towneley Hall nestled in the woodland and Towneley Golf Course and also the pitch at Putt area too.

In the distance are Brunshaw and Turf Moor estates with Turf Moor itself just to the left of centre.

You can just about make our St Peter's Centre on the left and Pendle Hill is just visible top left.

For yesterday's 'View from Above', we looked at Burnley from above St Matthew's Church, well to day we move back a bit and show you the church itself.

Taken on February 2026, this shows the church from above Powel Street, and when they say churches are the 'pillar of the community', this could not be more true of this magnificent building.

The original church was built between 1876 and 1879 and was designed by William Waddington and Sons. Alas the church was destroyed by a fire in the early part of the 20th century (1920's I believe) and was replaced by the building we se today.

Today we get a bit 'Arty' with our 'View from Above'

In late February we took the drone up above St Matthews Church to look over the town, and it gives us a different view of the area from beside the Church cross..

You can see the former Manchester Rd Methodist Church spire and Turf Moor in the distance behind it.

St Peter's Centre is clearly visible in the middle with the former BooHoo warehouses top centre.

Across the bottom is Harriett St and you can just see Greenhill Club's Bowling green too.

'View from Above' today takes us to the top of Headsandford Industrial Estate and we can see two 'things'.

One most of us will be familiar with which is the recycling centre, and above it a new development, that you can't see clearly from road level due to the blue fencing, but what is it? It looks like some sort of electrical facility or battery farm. Maybe I read the signs when I go up there later, watch this space!!!!

These pics were taken in early April 2026.

For today's 'View from Above' we look at another Burnley building, Belle Vue Mill, that has sadly fallen into a state of disrepair and is now derelict.

Most recently the building was occupied by CMA Tools who were founded in 1968 and ceased trading (dissolved according to Companies House in 2023) around 2018.

The former mill has a date stone of 1863, but some say it was built long before this.

The former mill, which is grade II listed is currently on the market, and from the outside, any investor would have to spend a lot to get this building back to its former glories.
