Christopher Hughes Photography

Christopher Hughes Photography . When I was sixteen, I stumbled upon a box of photography magazines and that was it, I was hooked!

I was fascinated by the photographer’s ability to capture incredible images of everyday things or a moment of an interaction or connection with a subject. At the time I was studying engineering at Chippenham Technical College and as it happened in the evenings the college was running a series of City & Guilds courses in photography, so as I was already there, I decided to enrol on one of the cours

es and this is where my relationship with the camera began. I spent many years experimenting with different photographic techniques and honing my skills. Between 2000 & 2006, while working for one of the UK’s largest companies I was responsible for developing several campaigns and found myself with the opportunity to carry out the photography for these projects. This prompted me to continue with my professional development at the Royal Photographic Society and in 2003 I made the decision to set up my own photography practice. In 2006 I finally made the life changing decision to leave my secure job and follow my dream to work as a professional photographer. In this period, I have carried out over 500 commissions across the west country.

I recently bumped into a friend and we spoke about our parents, all of whom have now passed. He told me that a previous post of mine really resonated with him.
A few years ago, he asked me to photograph his parents, Celia and George. They had such a great time during the shoot and spoke fondly of it for years afterwards.
Now, those images remain as a beautiful memory of them.

Tonight’s shoot with Nigel & Kirsty under the Calne Christmas tree didn’t go quite to plan when we arrived to find the lights switched off. 🎄
But sometimes the best moments don’t need lights — just love, laughter, and a little leftover Christmas magic ✨🤍

Those of you who know me personally will be aware that my mum passed away last week. I am so lucky that over the last 40 years I was able to photograph her on numerous occasions right from from the start of my photography trining at Chippenham College when I did my City & Guilds photography course in 1982.
Below is one of my favourite pictures that I captured in a studio session in 2003 after completing my studio flash courses with the Royal Photographic Society.
After the pandemic I found it very difficult to get back behind the camera having lost a great chunk of my photography business. However, I have over the last few months, since the death of my Dad carried out a few shoots and now after the loss of my Mum I realise the importance of our industry and the value of our work as photographers creating lasting memories.

Now that the clocks have gone back I don't have to stay up as late to be able to shoot at night!
Here are a few shots from Steve's 60th birthday shoot that we did this evening.

22 years ago, at the beginning of my professional career I roped my dad into a photoshoot so I could try a new lighting setup. We had a great laugh especially when the cleaner came in while dad had his trousers around his ankles getting into a new outfit!
In March of this year, he sadly passed away at the age of 86 and some of the pics from that shoot were used at his funeral.
It made me realise that we as a family were so lucky to have these lovely images to remember him by and the value of the work that us as professional photographers bring to people’s lives.
With Father’s Day on its way, why not book a portrait session for him, we will create some great pictures for longevity?

This picture was taken to promote the involvement of these students in a local radio programme. I wanted to create a paparazzi feel. However, I’m not sure I achieved this as they all look to friendly!

A few years ago, while continuing with my professional development with The University of Bournemouth, I was introduced to a number of photographers who had made an impact on our profession. One of these was Vivian Maier. She captured images that are now revered as a record of social history in the US, much of the subject matter no longer exists.
Closer to home now, one dank winter’s morning a couple of years ago I was at the local recycling plant and while on an elevated platform noticed this construction next to a manmade lake and could not resist capturing this image. Just a few days ago I went back and its gone!

Meet local radio broadcaster Carl Humphries.
For almost 30 years many of you would have heard this bloke’s voice on many of the radio stations across Wiltshire.
I must admit he was a bit of a handful in this studio session.
If you are based in the Wiltshire area and require a PR Headshot, contact me via my website or message me via this page.
