This has been a true passion project for me - a collision of two of my passions in life, midwifery and photography. I was reflecting recently on what it was that first made me fall in love with photographing people and I remembered meeting as a 12 year old. My mum was working on the international conference ‘letters home’ and Jillian was providing photographs from her South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission project ‘Truth and Lies’. I remember seeing all the photos laid out and being blown away by the power of those images, the stories and the truth they told. So I got to thinking about a truth in my own life I felt needed sharing and here we are. The vision was to showcase my incredible colleagues and how hard they work every single day despite the immense challenges we face in a system that needs change. Help them to feel proud again of the care they provide even when it can feel impossible some days. The theme this year is “one million more” and truly what more is there to say? Maternity care can only be safer when we receive the right funding from the government. Students should not be qualifying to find there isn’t a job for them.
I could write so much more but for today I will allow the photos and poetry to do the talking.
Happy International Day of the Midwife to my colleagues, both past and present ❤️
