I started the shoot saying “let’s follow her lead”

She was six weeks old, wide awake and genuinely so interested in the camera.

Her parents enquired. Then they had a house move, a wedding to plan and they put the newborn session on hold. Because life, beautifully and chaotically, does not pause for anyone.

Can I just say it? It was PERFECT.

And here is what I want every mum who thinks she has “missed it” to hear: you have not.

The curled-up sleepy newborn phase is one kind of magic and 6 weeks has it’s own: the eyes contact, the little sounds, the personality already arriving, fierce and unmistakabke, before they can even hold their head up.

There is no wrong time to come. There is only your time.

One day you will show them this photograph.

You will say: this was when you were new. This was where we were new.

And they will look at your face in the image, and they will know, without question that they were wanted and that they were loved. With a love that has no name yet but feels special, new, extraordinary.

That is what a photograph does. Not stop time. Something better - it holds a feeling, whole and intact, for as long as you need it.

She looked at him like she was seeing the whole world for the first time.

And she was.

Every week, I get to witness - in my studio - two people becoming three.

A family becoming itself right there in front of my eyes.

And if now, this moment feels lost among the craziness of having a newborn, among the sleepless nights and the exaustion, one day, when you look back at these photos, this will be the first chapter of your family story.

And writing this chapter for you is my biggest honour.

The bump. The anticipation. The quiet before everything changes.

Maternity sessions are one of my favourite things to photograph not because of the bump alone (though I love to photograph that too), but because of what I see in people’s faces.

The mix of excitement and nerves and pure, overwhelming love. The way she knows, in a matter of weeks, everything will be different.

This is the season in between.

Between what you were and what you will be.

And this very season deserves to be remembered.

Exactly as it is. Overwhelming, exciting, scaring and so very beautiful.

The way they fold perfectly into you, as if they have always known their way home.

The way their breathing slows when they are held close.

The way you can spend twenty minutes just watching them sleep and not once feel you are waisting your time.

These days are fleeting. I know you have heard that before.
