Whenever I test a new camera or lens, there’s one challenge it always has to face first… photographing my jumping spiders! 🕷️📸

Sony UK & Ireland recently lent me the α7R VI for a couple of weeks, so of course I had to photograph my pet Phidippus otiosus, pairing the camera with Sony’s 100mm macro lens.

This little spider is still very small, making it an ideal subject for testing how well a camera captures fine detail. Thanks to the α7R VI’s 67-megapixel sensor, I could crop in closely and still reveal an incredible amount of detail in the spider.

I’ll be sharing more images from the camera soon, and a full video about my experience with it is on the way.

Ruby by name, ruby by nature 🔥🦎

This is Ruby, a red monster bearded dragon photographed during my macro workshop at the Welsh Camera and Optics Show with Carmarthen Camera Centre Ltd

Her intense red colour is striking from a distance, but moving closer reveals the remarkable scales, ridges and tiny details surrounding her dark, reflective eye.

Swipe to meet Ruby properly in the final photograph.

Images edited using my Macro Workflow presets for Lightroom - Link in bio!

A huge thank you to Animal cwtch for bringing Ruby and for the care and hard work that went into looking after all our subjects throughout the workshop.

Meet Lzzy, a northern blue-tongued skink 🦎

Her blue tongue might be the first thing you notice, but under a macro lens her fiery copper eye is every bit as striking.

Swipe through for a closer look at the textures and colours within her eye, followed by the feature that gives this remarkable species its name.

The Force is strong with this one ✨🐍

This remarkable eye belongs to Princess Leia, a royal python photographed during my macro workshop at the Welsh Camera and Optics Show with Carmarthen Camera Centre Ltd

At this magnification, her eye reveals an incredible web of gold, bronze and black that would be almost impossible to appreciate with the naked eye.

A huge thank you to Animal cwtch for bringing Princess Leia and for the care and hard work that went into looking after all our subjects throughout the workshop.

Meet Barry, a rather spectacular panther chameleon 🦎

Barry was fantastic to photograph and the perfect subject for demonstrating camera settings and macro technique during my workshop at the Welsh Camera and Optics Show with Carmarthen Camera Centre Ltd

His calm nature allowed me to slow everything down, explain what I was changing and show how small adjustments could transform the final image.

Swipe through from the incredible curl of his tail to his colourful head and the remarkable details hidden within his skin.

A huge thank you to Animal cwtch for bringing Barry and for all the care and hard work that went into the session. It allowed me to concentrate on teaching, knowing the animals were being looked after throughout.
