INSTAGALLERY SERIES # 34: Stephan Gladieu
(These photographers will change your life...or perhaps they’ll just improve your Instagram feed, but either way, please go follow them!).
Stephan Gladieu is an established French photographer living in Paris. He began work as a war photographer covering conflicts around the world, but is more recently found focussing on humans and how they relate to their environment. In particular, he’s given us a window into lesser-known societies, from North Korea to The Democratic Republic of Congo. The latter delivered the images from his ‘Homo Détritus’ project; an incredible series of colourful portraits. Reminiscent of traditional African tribal outfits, he highlights the issue of waste, of the misuse of the Congo’s abundant raw materials by other countries, and finds beauty and impact in these redesigns. These images pop off the page, place them in context, draw on humour whilst commenting on serious issues and ultimately tell us an uncomfortable but intriguing human story.
