🐝🌼Hoverflies🌼🐝

Hoverflies are crucial pollinators. Their hairy bodies brush against the flower’s stigmas, and pollen is transferred between the fly and the flower. Although they carry less pollen on their bodies than bees, hoverflies compensate by visiting more flowers. Like bumblebees, most hoverflies are generalists and will visit many different types of plants. With a particular preference is thought to be yellow and white flowers.

It is also believed that hoverflies provide critical ecosystem functions, such as crop protection from pests, recycling of organic matter and long-distance pollen transfer.

The European Comma is a funny example of how much an animal can change after metamorphosis. The caterpilla of the Comma is very well camouflaged, but unlike other caterpillars who look like sticks and leaves it resembles bird droppings.

Summer may be over, but the bees aren't quite gone! As it grows cooler, you will still spot bees and hoverflies buzzing about. Even though theres less flowers, these pollinators continue their work well into autumn. They're vital for helping plants prepare for winter. There are very few native plants these bees can continue to live on, this is why when planning your gardens and hedgerows you should plant in flowering stages to give them the best chance for winter.
