Many people know the site today as The Corran Resort & Spa, but its story began over 200 years ago as Hurst House Farm. Built during the early nineteenth century as part of the Broadway Estate’s ambitious reclamation of the marshes between Laugharne and Pendine, Hurst House was one of several model farms created on land that had once been covered by the sea at high tide. For generations, it remained a working farm, surrounded by the drainage channels and reclaimed pasture that still define the landscape today.
A new chapter began in the early 2000s when the historic farm buildings were carefully transformed into the elegant Hurst House Hotel. Combining the charm of the original Georgian farm with luxury accommodation and fine dining, the boutique hotel quickly gained a reputation as one of West Wales’ hidden gems. In 2001, actor Neil Morrissey, best known for Men Behaving Badly and as the voice of Bob the Builder, became co-owner alongside hotel entrepreneur Matt Roberts. Having fallen in love with Laugharne and its Dylan Thomas connections, Morrissey invested in several local landmarks and helped bring national attention to Hurst House. The hotel attracted celebrity guests, won awards and earned a reputation for exceptional hospitality, with ambitious plans to expand the brand beyond West Wales.
Like many ambitious ventures, however, the road was not always smooth. Financial pressures led to the business entering administration in 2008, although the hotel continued under new investment. Following further development, including the addition of a luxury spa, indoor pool and holiday lodges, the property was relaunched as The Corran Resort & Spa, taking its name from the nearby River Coran. Under this new identity, it became one of Wales’ best-known boutique spa destinations, welcoming visitors from across the UK seeking a peaceful retreat on the Carmarthenshire coast.
Sadly, the challenges facing the hospitality industry, particularly in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic, proved difficult to overcome. In 2022, The Corran Resort & Spa closed after entering administration, bringing to an end another remarkable chapter in the history of the site. From reclaimed marshland and Victorian farming to celebrity ownership and luxury tourism, Hurst House and The Corran have continually reinvented themselves while remaining part of the rich heritage of the Taf Estuary. Many local people still hope that these beautiful historic buildings will one day begin yet another chapter in their long and fascinating story.
