The cat is out of the bag - my family appeared on , the new cruise travel series on Channel 4! Currently showing Sundays at 8pm, and available on catchup. At the end of the first episode you may have seen this spectacular fireworks display - the finale of Aomori's Nebuta festival.

Back in August we visited Japan aboard the Princess Cruises Diamond Princess cruise ship, whose itinerary stopped at summer festivals across the country. One stop was the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri (ねぶた祭り) featuring massive, illuminated floats (nebuta) portraying warriors, demons, and mythical beasts.

By day they parade through the streets; on the final night they’re illuminated and set afloat on the water and a huge fireworks display lights up the bay.

Channel 4's film crew followed me on board the ship that night as I captured the highlights of the fireworks. Here’s a selection of my favourite shots.

It's worth getting up early for a dawn sail-in to the port of Seattle

Captured on deck during an early morning sail in to Seattle on board the Norwegian Cruise Line Norwegian Joy cruise ship. For a fleeting moment, the colours of sunrise created a beautiful silhouette of the Space Needle and city skyline as the mountains passed behind.

The Milky Way photographed at Skrinkle Haven last year. Not long now until shots like these are possible again - if the rain and the clouds go away of course!

✨ Edit with me ✨
The International Space Station at Pontargothi Church

A few months ago I photographed the International Space Station as it crossed the night sky above Pontargothi Church. It was a very challenging edit - a nearby street light created some unattractive muddy lighting and harsh shadows, and there was a low level mist that night interfering with the clarity of my photos.

This ended up being an ideal case study for my Introduction to Astrophotography course that has been published by Luminar Neo recently.

I've put together this little guide on how an image like this is put together, this is very much the cliff notes, but you'll see it's not as simple as point and click.

Back in August we visited Japan aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, whose itinerary stopped at summer festivals across the country. One stop was the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri (ねぶた祭り) featuring massive, illuminated paper-mâché floats (nebuta) portraying warriors, demons, and mythical beasts.

By day they parade through the streets; on the final night they’re illuminated and set afloat on the water.

The Aomori Nebuta Wa Rasse Museum preserves some of the most impressive floats from past years. The craftsmanship, colour, and energy behind Nebuta are insane!

If you ever find yourself in Aomori, don’t skip this masterpiece of tradition and artistry. A film crew followed me through the museum that day capturing my favourite angles and perspectives (and interviewed my long-suffering wife Louise while I scratched my photographers' itch to document everything🤣). Here’s a selection of my favourite shots.

❤️ Dydd Santes Dwynwen Hapus ❤️

Over on Instagram I've just shared this post outlining some of the creative decisions I make in editing a milky way photo like this.

I recently prepared a 12-hour "Introduction to Astrophotography" video course with Luminar Neo where you watch me edit my night sky photos step by step using Luminar Neo, including the raw files I start with. Luminar Neo is a great photo editing tool, but the principles of how I've tackled this image are universal - pardon the pun.

If you use Luminar Neo, the link to access the course is here 👇

My first time capturing the northern lights in beautiful Tenby ✨ Another night to remember under the stars with aurora displays all across Europe tonight!

It is somewhat ironic that while I was on Zoom doing a talk about astrophotography with Camversation, this almighty northern lights display was kicking off outside.

2025 - travels with my camera 📷✈️⛴️

It was a special year for us - we got to tick off a bucket list destination by visiting Alaska by cruise. Over the summer we spent a few weeks traveling around Japan and in the Spring we toured several European countries.

Naturally, the camera came with me! It's going to take a loooong time to process all the photos, so for now, I've picked just one photo from each place.

This seems the right time to add that I am now leading PhotoHound - the website, app and community for travel photographers. (A formal announcement on this will be coming shortly.) This bumper crop of images will be added there tonight. If you have a trip planned this year, check out https://www.photohound.co to discover where, when and how to take the best travel photos.
