Today I want to wish the most incredible woman, my sweetest friend Suzy Rook, the very best of luck as she takes on one of the toughest challenges imaginable – swimming in the icy Arctic waters near the North Pole.
Most people will see the swim and think about the freezing temperatures, the ice, the distance and the physical challenge. But those of us who know Suzy see something much bigger.
We see the woman who faced cancer with unbelievable courage.
We see the friend who never stops showing up for other people, even when she is carrying her own battles.
We see the mum, the teammate, the social worker, the community champion and the person who somehow manages to make everyone around her feel stronger.
Last year brought challenges that would have broken many people. Yet Suzy met them with determination, resilience and the same infectious smile she always wears. After her thyroid cancer diagnosis and treatment, she didn't just focus on recovering. She decided to turn her experience into something that could help others.
This swim is for two charities that have been there when people needed them most: the Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust, supporting those affected by thyroid cancer, and Back Onside, helping people struggling with their mental health. Both causes are deeply personal to Suzy and represent the support, hope and understanding that can make all the difference during life's darkest moments.
I've watched Suzy train through cold mornings, dark days and every kind of Scottish weather. I've seen the commitment, the sacrifices and the determination behind every single dip. But more importantly, I've seen the heart behind it.
This challenge isn't about proving how tough she is. Anyone who knows Suzy already knows that.
It's about giving back.
It's about turning pain into purpose.
It's about showing others that even after the hardest chapters of your life, there is still strength, hope and adventure ahead.
Suzy, words will never fully express how proud I am of you. You inspire people every day without even realising it. Your courage has already touched so many lives, and this swim is another reminder of the remarkable person you are.
As you step into those freezing Arctic waters, know that an army of friends, family, teammates and supporters will be cheering for every stroke.
You've already won our hearts long before you reach the finish.
Good luck, my beautiful friend. Swim strong, swim proud and know that we couldn't be prouder of you.
We love you. ❤️ Also be less busy so I can spend more time with you 😂 Suzy Rook
