Training for a Combat Medical Technician is always quite well rounded. We had to stay on top of our own skills, principally pre-hospital care, but also in the skills of the unit we were attached to. From triage, proper stretcher carries, vehicle maintenance, all the way to weapon systems if you were attached to the Infantry or communications systems if you were attached to Signallers.
Here, in an old aircraft hangar, we took the time to learn quite a niche skill: make up special effects for simulations! Our instructor mocked up a gnarly open fracture on my leg, it even oozed when you squished it with a stick. The cold meant the makeup was impossible to wash off, I had a red gummy leg for the rest of the exercise. Shoulda seen the guy with the (simulated) head injury though.

Two Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) Combat Medical Technicians “CMTs” attached to the Company HQ during an attack. In this setting, CMTs provide a Role 1 level of medical care during CASEVAC to an aid station, for subsequent movement up the medical support echelons, which we call MEDEVAC. These “echelons” are standardised throughout NATO.
Role 1: small unit medical cover, such as attached CMTs, Regimental Aid Stations.
Role 2: Brigade level care, similar role and capabilities to a civilian Emergency Department.
Role 3: Division level care, this provides care with the potential to return patients to duty. These are usually held at readiness close the the area of operations. Camp Bastion’s Major Trauma Centre, or the Royal Navy’s RFA Argus are examples of modern Role 3 centres.
Role 4: any facility able to provide definitive care for a patient. The principle Role 4 for the MoD is the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham.

A Royal Naval Reserve (RNR) Training Officer (T.O) mans the enclosed bridge on board HMS Charger, a P2000 Patrol & Training Ship. T.O’s are often in service with University Royal Naval Units (URNUs), responsible for introducing militarisation/ marinisation training for potential RN Officers and those in Phase 1 training under Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC).
The Sub Lieutenant sits in front of the Union Jack. Many say the Union Jack is only named so (as opposed to the Union Flag) when flown from the Jack Staff of a warship. However, the term “Jack” initially used to describe a smaller flag flown at sea predates the Jack Staff itself by some 150 years, so it remains an interesting point of conversation.
