Another slice of March, 2024.

This month was shortly after I had bought a longer lens, and eager to test things out, I found that I thoroughly enjoyed trying to capture arial moments. In the space of a few walks, I was lucky enough to get a few shots of red-kites and a hobbyists UAV.

A slice of March, 2024.

The typical upload on this account is in landscape and that is my prefered style of photography (as may be obvious) but this month l've been looking specifically for portrait shots to mix things up. These photos are from:

1. Whiteleaf cross,
2. Captains wood,
3. Tring park,
4. Pednor, and
5. Pednor.

Welcome back to Chiltern Sights! Despite the hiatus from posts, thousands of photos have been taken and there's now a planned upload schedule for 2025.

At the end of each month, I'll sift through the month's photos from the past three years and grace your timeline with my favourites.

Kicking off with sunsets, January's first two images are from 2023 and they're two of my favourite sunset photos to date. There are another three fantastic sunsets from under the Pednor skies this year and the rest focus more on our woodland and rolling fields. Even in January, there's fascinating life in the undergrowth.

I recently (more than a month ago) bought a new lens for my camera. Although it wasn't a huge upgrade, it's opened up areas of photography I previously hadn't thought of or experimented with. It's had me thinking about what my photography style really is. I haven't come to a conclusion but over the past month I've had a lot of fun with long exposures and low-light conditions with some mixed results and lots of trial and (mostly) error.

I think I'm starting to get the hang of it so here are a couple of my favourite shots from recent weeks.

Its world mental health day so here are some nice cozy shots from around Pitstone hill/windmill in the hopes that it'll improve somebodies day, it's what little I can do from this account.

It's safe to say this area always improves my mood no matter the weather so hopefully the magic will work on others.

Spent a few hours on Wednesday walking around the local fields and the weather was perfect. Got some great landscape shots accompanied by a sunset.

Also, never forget to look down, there are always lots of interesting flora and fauna underfoot. As far as I am aware, the moth is an apple ermine (but there was a whole lot of them on a blackthorn bush for some reason) and the beetle is a lesser stag.

A series of short walks.

Given that it's summer and the weather has taken a turn for the worse, it seemed appropriate to try and remind everyone that it is in fact still summer. A couple of weeks ago, I went on a series of short walks and didn't have the intention of positing any of them, however, the weather has kindly written a post for me.

Wednesday: I paid a visit to Pitstone hill. Easily one of my favourite places, the views are rival to those at Coombe hill and Ivinghoe beacon except this spot offers a better walk along the ridge of the hill, giving you panoramic views towards Ivinghoe, Pitstone and Wendover

Thursday: A passing visit to Coombe hill. On my way home, I realised I had the opportunity to catch the sunset at Coombe hill. Need I say more?

Friday: I took a short trip around the chess valley. I've covered this area more than once in detail but it never disappoints. The rolling hills, lush fields, enchanting woodland and delicate villages really make this place feel magical.

Saturday: a local visit to an area near Pednor (also featured in my last post). I didn't have to travel far for this one but you rarely need to. I was peacefully left in a field at dusk with nothing but a camera, a beautiful sky, and a few skittish Roe deer to keep me company.

Sunday: I travelled slightly further afield to College Lake. A place I hadn't visited before but it has certainly cemented itself on my list of favourite places and I thought I would grace you with two pictures rather than just one. The footpath circumnavigates the lake with a number of scenic picnic areas, bird hides, and tourist information boards but its also worth mentioning there is a nice pub just round the corner.

An appreciation of blackthorn:

Spring is well underway in the Chilterns and we are blessed with lots of rain, a little bit of sun, and plenty of mud. Despite the mixed weather, we are also blessed with many wild flowers which bring colour and life back into the landscape.

Snowdrops, daffodils, and bluebells are iconic but one plant which is often unmentioned and unappreciated is blackthorn. Often confused with hawthorn, blackthorn is one of the first plants to flower in spring and is notable for being one of the fist blooms with its snow-white flowers that appear before it starts producing leaves. In the Chilterns, we're lucky to have many established hedgerows where it thrives and puts on an incredible display.

The baubles of blossom often cover the landscape, and seemingly every footpath in this part of the countryside is bordered with blackthorn. It nestles between bare trees in the woods, and stands in open fields parks making it easy to find. If you're smart, a carefully selected footpath or a bit of exploration will take you to some of the more established hedgerows where blackthorn can thrive for up to 100 years! If you're even smarter, you'll take note of where these areas are so that you can come back in autumn to gather some sloes to make sloe gin. But be careful, its called blackthorn for a reason, it has some vicious thorns.
