Sir Tim Smit, co-founder of the Eden Project and the man behind the restoration of the Lost Gardens of Heligan, speaking at the Harmony in Food and Farming weekend at Holden Farm Dairy 🌱

Inspired by His Majesty King Charles III’s book Harmony: A New Way of Looking at Our World, the weekend explored how its principles can be put into practice across food and farming.

Sir Tim spoke about the people who saved heritage seeds, the importance of healthy food and the need to decentralise our food, energy and health systems to build greater resilience 🌿

Katie Allen of Great Cotmarsh Farm shared the story of her farm at the Harmony in Food and Farming weekend at Holden Farm Dairy 🌱

Native-breed sheep provide wool for blankets, plants grown on the farm are used for natural dyes, and cattle hides are being turned into leather through a microscale vegetable tannery 🐑

It’s a great example of Harmony in practice, connecting soil health and biodiversity with farming, food and fibre.

Through Fashion as a Force for Nature, Katie is also helping fashion and textile students understand where their materials come from and how their choices can work better with nature 🌿

Sarah Raven at the Festival of Gardens and Nature at Ballintubbert in May 🌿

During the main breeding season, roughly March to August, garden birds seek out caterpillars, aphids, slugs and snails to feed their young, helping to keep garden pests under control.

Create the right habitat, Sarah says, and the birds will do some of the work for you 🐦

Their vision is simple: connect schools with local food hubs and nearby producers, creating better meals for children while supporting farmers and local communities. 🌱

Tory Hill House Organic Farm, near Croom, Co. Limerick.

Run by Hannah Quinn-Mulligan, her mother Kate and grandmother Catherine 👩‍🌾👩‍🌾👩‍🌾
Their small herd of Jersey and British Friesian cows 🐄 are milked once a day, producing organic raw milk 🥛 that is used to make kefir, yoghurt, skyr, cream, butter and ice cream 🍦, while the farm also rears 100% grass-fed, pasture-raised beef and organic pigs.

The Coach House Farm Shop is open:

Pop in for fresh organic raw milk and dairy products 🥛, eggs 🥚, organic meat 🥩, local bread and baked goods made with organic flour 🍰, jams 🍓 and other seasonal produce.

“100 Duhallows could serve every primary school with locally sourced food.” 🍎

One of the thought-provoking discussions at the Farming for Nature Festival was with Ruth Hegarty and Thomas O’Connor, exploring how school meals can support our health, nature, farmers and local communities.

Through the More than a Meal project, Ruth is helping to shape a new vision for school food in Ireland. Fresh meals cooked from scratch, locally sourced ingredients, and stronger links between schools, farmers and communities.

Their work with Duhallow Community Food Services is already demonstrating what is possible, with locally prepared meals reaching primary schools every day.

It was an inspiring conversation about how feeding children well can also support local food systems and the future of farming. 🌱
