In February 1991, while serving aboard the Type 42 destroyer HMS Gloucester during the Gulf War, I received a package of letters from pupils at Matthew Humberston School in Cleethorpes, my old school.

The letters had been written during RE lessons over several days and sent out to the ship while things in the Gulf were becoming increasingly tense. As a radar operator working in the operations room, mail from home meant a great deal to all of us onboard, and these messages from complete strangers, schoolchildren taking the time to write, stayed with me ever since.

After my mum recently passed away, we discovered that she had carefully kept every one of those letters for the past 35 years.

I’ve now photographed them to help preserve them properly. I’ve redacted surnames for privacy, but I wanted to share them because they capture a moment in time that feels both distant and strangely close.

To everyone who wrote those letters back in 1991, thank you. And to my mum, thank you for keeping them safe all these years RIP.

If anyone recognises their handwriting or remembers taking part in this at Matthew Humberston School in 1991 let me know.
