DAY 8: Is your camera making your photos too bright or too dark?

There’s a quick way and easy way for beginners to fix this problem - Exposure Compensation.

Welcome to Day 8 of Learn Photography in 30 Days, our free photography series throughout September.

Your camera is constantly measuring the light and trying to work out what it thinks is the correct exposure.

But here’s the thing…

Your camera doesn’t always get it right!

That’s where Exposure Compensation comes in.

In today’s video I’ll show you how to set exposure compensation on your camera. It’s particularly useful when you’re shooting in modes such as Program, Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority, where your camera is still making some of the exposure decisions for you.

DAY 7: Is it time to try manual mode?

If that little M on your camera dial has always felt a bit intimidating, today we’re going to make it much easier to understand!

Welcome to Day 7 of Learn Photography in 30 Days, our FREE photography series throughout September.

Over the past few days, we’ve looked at aperture, shutter speed and ISO individually.

Now we’re bringing all three together.

In Manual Mode, instead of your camera automatically choosing some of your exposure settings, you take control.

Today’s challenge - turn your camera dial to M and take a few photographs while deliberately changing your Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO

Don’t worry about getting the perfect photograph.

Today is simply about getting comfortable changing those three settings and watching what happens to your exposure.

The more you experiment, the less intimidating Manual Mode becomes!

DAY 6: Do want to take better action shots or deliberately show movement as blur?

Today we’re talking about Shutter Priority Mode, a really useful camera mode for beginners, when movement is the most important part of your photograph.

Welcome to Day 6 of Learn Photography in 30 Days, our free photography series throughout September!

In Shutter Priority, YOU choose the shutter speed and your camera automatically selects the aperture needed for the correct exposure.

📷 Today’s challenge - find something moving and photograph it in Shutter Priority Mode.

⚡ Use a fast shutter speed to freeze action.
💨 Then try a slower shutter speed to deliberately show some movement.

Compare the two - which do you prefer?

In Aperture Priority, YOU choose the aperture and your camera automatically selects the shutter speed needed to achieve the correct exposure.

Today’s challenge - wwitch your camera to A or Av Mode and photograph the same subject using a few different apertures.

Pay attention to what happens to the background and depth of field as you change the f-number.

DAY 4: What exactly is ISO?

Ever taken a photograph indoors and wondered why it suddenly looks a bit grainy?

Your ISO could be the reason.

Welcome to Day 4 of Learn Photography in 30 Days, our FREE photography series throughout September!

ISO is one of the three main settings we use to control exposure, alongside aperture and shutter speed.

TODAY’S CHALLENGE:

Photograph the same scene at different ISO settings e.g. 100, 800 and 3200
