We’re shining the spotlight today on one of our OG 52 Creative members – Emma McCann ✨

Emma has been part of the challenge from the beginning and has consistently brought creativity, curiosity, and dedication to her photography journey. One of the things I love most about Emma’s approach is that she embraces both smartphone photography and camera photography, proving that it’s never about the equipment alone. It’s about the eye behind the image.

Over the years, Emma has taken part in a number of courses and workshops with me, always showing up with enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and a real passion for improving her craft. It’s been wonderful watching her confidence and creativity continue to grow.

Last year, some of Emma’s images was selected for inclusion in a local exhibition - such a lovely achievement and so well deserved. I was absolutely delighted for her and so proud of her journey.

In this post, we’ve sharing some examples of Emma’s work alongside some Q&A slides so you can learn a little more about her creative process and photography journey.

It would be very difficult to choose one of Emma’s shots as my favourite but I think the one that stands out is the shot of the hover fly in the flower. The rich golden yellows create a glowing backdrop that feels warm and vibrant, while the darker tones of the insect and flower details provide beautiful contrast and definition. Everything feels bright, energetic, and alive.

The detail captured in particular is impressive. There’s a real sense of curiosity and discovery in her photo - a reminder that extraordinary photographs can often be found in the smallest moments of nature.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 ...

I wanted to share the story behind this photograph because lately I’ve been thinking a lot about patience, persistence and how life often rewards us when we least expect it.

This image was taken in Bantry Bay in Co Cork a few years ago while I was on holiday. The strange thing is, I almost never took it.

It had rained all day. Torrential rain, grey skies and strong winds. I’d travelled to several different locations hoping to capture some photographs, but nothing seemed to work. Everywhere looked dull and flat and by the end of the day I felt completely deflated creatively.

I returned back to Bantry convinced the day had been a total write-off photographically. Before heading back to my accommodation, I stopped at a local shop to pick up a few things. And when I walked back outside again… this was the sky waiting for me.

Within minutes the entire atmosphere changed. The clouds suddenly opened with incredible colour and light reflecting across the water. The bay became completely transformed.

Thankfully, I still had my camera with me because for around fifteen minutes the sky put on one of the most spectacular sunsets I’ve ever witnessed.

That experience stayed with me because photography often teaches us lessons that go far beyond camera settings. Sometimes it reminds us to be patient, not to give up too quickly and to hold onto hope a little longer.

Creativity can feel like that too. There are seasons where inspiration feels distant or where we wonder if we’re making progress at all. But often the most rewarding moments come after the difficult ones, if we stay open to them.

That’s one of the reasons I created Creative Circle - a supportive photography community where people can continue learning, stay creatively inspired and encourage one another through both the exciting and frustrating parts of photography.

So I decided to create exactly that.

The Creative Circle is a brand new monthly photography membership designed to help photographers stay inspired, improve creatively and feel part of a supportive community.
