‘Love’s tenderness’ The recent winter weather in Eryri National Park Snowdonia, when the snow was being blown towards me, reminded me of Hadewijch's words:

We are all caught in winter’s grip
But even more caught is the person who loves
Because they are held with Love’s power.
If anyone is bold enough and strong enough
To risk everything in an adventure -
Welcome the sweet and the bitter -
They should send Love an invoice.
They they’ll touch Love
With total tenderness.

Hadewijch-13th century Beguine

Hope: what is this? It is a resolute commitment, despite the evidence of today, to a future that will be better. In these uncertain times with a predominance of anxiety-inducing headlines in our daily newsfeeds, we may find ourselves having to put considerable effort in to keeping ourselves connected with any sense of hope. However, hope is there, often seen in small things. Hope is frequently also heard in the quietness that is almost drowned out by the noise of busyness and many distractions.
When our life, our day, has been rough and stormy we need to know that we have a safe place to anchor in for the night. We need to find a harbour: a place of refuge and protection from the worst of the day’s turbulence. We need to practice paying attention to the little signs of hope. So how might we find that Evening Calm after the buffeting of our days?
We need to seek a balance between earth and sky: to remember to look up and see the big picture and not get stuck in minute detail at our feet.
We need to practice being attentive to beauty so we stop and drink it in.
We need to give thanks for the warmth of the evening light and notice that there is still a cold, blue light but it is wrapped around with the warmth of sunlight.
Finally, we need to stop our busyness. We need to drop our anchor and to do so we have to let go of all we have held this day. The warmth of this sunset reminds me of the warmth of love, and most especially of God’s love for each one of us. In the ancient, end of day prayer, Compline, we remind ourselves: ‘In peace I will lie down and sleep for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.’ (Psalm 4:8)

‘Lazarus’ by Pascuzzi - bronze sculpture. Festival hosted by in . Lazarus called out from the tomb. His face is half in light, half in shade. This is a threshold moment. His eyes are closed. He is yet to awaken fully to this resurrected life.
Take time to ponder this. How does it speak to you at this moment in your life?

'My Strength' Sculpture by Alan Pascuzzi. Maybe an intentionally ambiguous title - Is it my personal strength? Look at and feel those muscles? What am I using my strength for? Or is this me reaching out for strength beyond myself? Reaching out for God's strength in some challenging circumstances? Come and see for yourself. St Mary's Church Conwy. Church open all day and specially lit this evening from 6 30 pm with chance to engage in your own way with the art work of this talented artist.

Gossamer Threads - I was out walking with a friend who commented on the ease with which I notice small details. Of course, it is the quality of light that catches my eye. It comes with practice. These fine filaments washed in the morning rain were now refracting the gentle sun's light in a rainbow of colours.
I was reminded of Walt Whitman's beautiful poem - A Noiseless Spider - where in the second stanza he uses the image as a metaphor for the soul. Those 'gossamer threads are flung out' until they catch somewhere and form the bridge you need now.
Clearly there is an invitation here to consider that movement for ourselves. The spider's silk may look flimsy: in reality it is 5x stronger than steel!
What connection does my soul most need at this moment? Do I have the courage to keep flinging out those gossamer threads trusting that they will catch somewhere, and form a bridge between me and the next new place/relationship/mode of being?

This was an amazing team who were re-working the ropes for the prawn fishing boats. There were miles of ropes to be checked. The woman was checking for frayed and worn out parts. The man was repairing with such attention to detail: frayed edges were trimmed with minimal waste. New and sturdy knots were woven that would hold good for many days, underneath the waters with their strong currents. There was rhythm, patience, attention to detail, and joy in their labours. The knowledge and skills passed on from one generation to the next and to the next.

This level of careful looking, detailed repairs, knowledge of the right knot for the right job, and the necessary layering of the rope is what then enables them to enjoy the open seas, to lay the lines and fish for the prawns, to be safe, and to earn a wage.

What is the equivalent in your life? Where are the frayed edges? What needs trimming? What needs reworking for strength and durability? Where do you need to exercise patience? What do you need to learn? Who will help with this work?

As Joan Chittister says in Illuminated Life: 'If there is anything that measures spiritual depth in a work-oriented society, it is surely the work we do, and why we do it... It fulfils our responsibility to the future.'' p122/3
