I sometimes meet couples who apologise for wanting a small wedding.

They tell me they’re not really “wedding people”. They don’t want a big fuss, they don’t love being photographed and they’d rather spend the afternoon talking to the people they love than following a timetable.

I always think… that sounds absolutely lovely.

There isn’t a scale for meaningful weddings. Quiet doesn’t mean less joyful. Simple doesn’t mean less special. It just means you’ve planned a day that feels like you.

Those are the weddings I seem to find, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

A couple of wedding enquiries this week reminded me why I’ve gradually found my place photographing smaller weddings.

Some people absolutely love the big, traditional celebration and I think that’s brilliant, but I’ve realised over the years that I’m much more at home at the quieter weddings. The ones that last a couple of hours, where everyone knows everyone else, the ceremony is the important bit and afterwards people simply want to have a drink, chat to their favourite people and enjoy getting married.

Quite a few of my couples tell me they’re a bit camera shy, or that they don’t want the day to feel like one long photo shoot, and I completely understand that because I wouldn’t either.

I like being there, taking photographs that feel like part of the day rather than taking over the day, and then quietly disappearing again, leaving people to celebrate.

It’s never really been about photographing the biggest weddings for me, it’s always been about photographing the weddings that feel the most real.

A glance through a window, a quiet smile, someone taking it all in before the day really begins. Those are often the photographs that tell the story best.

The big moments matter, of course, but it’s the little ones that often mean the most.

Mums…

They’re a huge part of so many weddings (and sometimes, sadly, their absence is felt just as deeply).

But when they are there, they’re woven through the whole day.

Helping with dresses, making sure everyone has what they need, having a quiet moment away from the crowds, laughing at something ridiculous and occasionally wondering how on earth their little person is old enough to be getting married.

I think because I’m now often closer in age to the mums than the brides, I notice these moments more than ever.

The pride. The joy. The nerves. The little glances and reassuring touches.

Weddings aren’t just about two people. They’re family stories too.

And if your mum is part of your day, you can be sure she’ll be part of the story I tell.

Why I Like Smaller Weddings

Because they’re often less about putting on a show and more about spending time with the people you actually want to spend time with.

As a photographer, that means more conversations, more stories and more opportunities to notice the things that make every wedding different.

The venue matters. The flowers matter.

But the people are usually the best bit.

Emma and Francis were married at Syrencot on a gloriously sunny day in April.

I loved this wedding.

Partly because Syrencot is a beautiful place to photograph. The orangery is filled with natural light, the grounds are lovely and when the sun starts to drop there are endless opportunities for photographs.

But mostly because Emma and Francis were such good fun.

They never took themselves too seriously, spent the day laughing with their friends and family and were completely up for making the most of that incredible evening light.

Some weddings just have a lovely atmosphere from start to finish.
