The Working Day

The c**k crows, up before the sun
his chorus wakes, so his job is done
farmers and bankers therefore rise
wash dreams from their sleepy eyes
shops unlock shutters in the street
setting grocery windows, very neat
children wend their way to school
learning sums and the golden rule
Autumn shows in coloured hues
reds, browns, in hedges to amuse
streams meander through reed breaks
watering cattle, ruminant thirst it slakes
after hot hours in dust motes at work
farmers finish as does the bank clerk
home to rest and an after dinner sleep
easing sore muscles and counting sheep
