FORMAT International Photography Festival is the UK’s leading international contemporary festival of photography and related media, and is held right here, in Derby every 2 years.

To help realise the festival we are looking to create a team of enthusiastic volunteers from all backgrounds to help organise & deliver different aspects of the festival.

FORMAT23 includes an ambitious programme of exhibitions, events, talks and portfolio reviews, working with over 200 international photographers, curators and industry professionals.

Next year’s festival launches on 16 March 2023 and runs until 9 April 2023, and we are looking for volunteers who can offer support during the festival by looking after venues and artworks, engaging with the public, leading tours, supporting events and more.

FORMAT Festival is a great opportunity to engage with like-minded people, talk about photography, be introduced to new artworks and artists, introduce new visitors to the world of photography, or simply help make something amazing happen.

As a volunteer you can:

Meet artists and industry professionals from across the world, spark up conversation and network

Boost your confidence and experience talking to the general public

Gain experience in a sector you might be thinking about working in

Get involved with the local art scene of Derby and local areas

Learn new skills and develop existing skills

To apply please download and complete an application form and send to [email protected] or by post to QUAD, Derby (full information in application form)

Deadline for Volunteering applications is Sunday 27 November 2022 23:59 (GMT)

Room 10

Whilst invigilating gallery 10, I found myself drawn to this image. How simple and vernacular it appears on the surface, yet it harbours so many underlying meanings that come of the light of the pandemic.
With all the talk of bubbles, the tent appears to be a literal one. Yet there is no sense of feeling trapped by the space. If anything, I see the door left open as a way of patiently but readily awaiting to return to the ‘normal’ world. From a collective perspective it defines one of many ways we have embraced nature in our day-to-day routines, a welcome escapism. In Goldblatt’s statement she notes that love and care are driving factors and I feel this is evident as the image highlights this desire to keep the children safe, to protect them without taking away their happiness. The girl appears content as she eats and reads in this safe space, sheltered from a harsher reality.

London Alternative Photography Collective: Unstable/Sustainable

Room 9

If you fancy letting your mind wander outside of the traditional parameters of the photographic medium, I would highly recommend checking out the fascinating work in Room 9 from the London Alternative Photography Collective. The work shown brings into question ideas of stability and sustainability in relation to images, whilst exploring the relationship between photography and permanence. For me, it was interesting to engage with work that naturally thrives and flourishes within the physical realm as opposed to the digital, so when viewing it, I began to think about what happens in this digitisation process of the work to be viewed and interacted with through the screen. An excellent thought-provoking collection of works by Noemi Filetti, Chloe Obermeyer, Hannah Fletcher, Melanie King, Diego Valente, Nettie Edwards, Ryan Moule, that I would defiantly recommend checking out in this year’s FORMAT21’s Virtual Gallery space in New Art City! https://format.newart.city/

Room 4

“The Dog’s in the Car” by Tami Aftab, presented in room 4 of FORMAT21’s Virtual Gallery that you can access through the link https://format.newart.city , works on those notions of participatory work, using the relation the artist has with her father Tony. The work makes the viewer consider the importance of consent and the ethical questions associated with it. Even though Tami has a deep connection with her father, she needs to work closely with him and respect his choices regarding the project and how much he wants to share about his condition. The intimacy in the portraits is a clear window into the daughter-father relationship and the necessity of the father to express what he is going through. This project is powerful in the way that the story is told from Tony’s perspective on his illness, and the feelings he needs to cope with.

In this Kolker cleverly uses the classical beauty of the sculpture of Venus de Milo, which has been embedded into culture and art for centuries. He gradually evolves this familiar piece to a shape we cannot recognise without the original sculpture next to it.
By deconstructing this sculpture into its basic form of shapes using methods such as reduction techniques, Kolker demonstrates how important these familiar and iconic objects are. This has particular resonance in these uncertain times, and as viewers, we are transported to a familiar place in our minds and then taken further to a new place by these reductions of the sculpture which challenges our idea of form as well as familiarity.
