Thanks to for the pair of their campfire collab with . I’ve honestly never understood the allure of camping, it seems like living in a house only worse in every conceivable way. But the inspiration of campfire lights and earth trails for the coloureay works really well so I’m glad this is as far as I’ll ever need to venture into the culture 🏕️

The outcome vs the setup ⏩

It’s easy to feel like you don’t have the resources to get started with creative projects. With that in mind I thought it was worth sharing the setup for which I’ve used to connect to millions of people over the years. It’s photoshop, research on my MacBook and intermittent FIFA when I get bored. You never know how far you can get with what you’ve got at your disposal, the best thing you can do is make a start ⚡️

P.S my PSN is martynewoma if anyone wants to get battered

A few months ago I had a conversation with about how weird I found it that most people have to spend the majority of their time at work, having conversations they aren’t interested in completing tasks they don’t care about the outcomes of and how alien life felt to me. He said something really poignant to the effect of “your people spent 10’000 years in Africa in constant community with one another and nature. Now you live in derby thinking about council tax. Obviously you’re going to be disillusioned”. That was the genesis of my latest editorial which you can read more about on 🌍

Huge thanks to for including me in their list for Media & Marketing in recognition of my work founding and running and my photography and writing career 💫 a few notes:

• individual awards are great but all humans are born equal. That’s why everyone should have the same access to resources and opportunities, if that was the case we’d see way more people thriving and achieving than you think. Independent media’s duty is to continue to advocate for that
• No one achieves anything alone, cheers to my mates and collaborators down the years 🫂
• The media industry is in the trenches. So many talented people are struggling, not least the lovely journalists at Forbes who are embroiled in a 2 year union battle rn. You can read about it on Bloomberg and it’d be great to see other list makes vocalise their support for them 🗣️
• If you believe in ’s mission we need you! Hit the 🔗 in bio and support us monthly for access to exclusive articles, event privileges and early access to clothes drops

Meditations: Blue pill, red pill

As part of a outreach programme I recently gave a talk to some secondary school students about my career and founding and running . During the briefing we were warned to circumvent questions about Andrew Tate. It really struck me that he was influential enough amongst children that age, for the producers to have to say that.

But I also think individualising misogyny to boogeyman figures is counter productive. It creates the myth that once a public figure is "taken down" the problem is solved. The popularity of grifters who exploit masculine fragility and subsequent backlash against them doesn't address the legitimate systemic issues men face in the modern world. If we don't assess why people are disillusioned in the first place, there's going to continue to be a conveyor belt of people who can exploit that desperation and confusion for profit. To the detriment of literally everyone. Dialogue about life through a "blue pill, red pill" dichotomy isn't nuanced enough for the modern world and young men deserve better. Going forward we have some projects that will contribute a bit more to conversation...

This year I ticked off some specific career goals including writing an op-ed for a national newspaper, creating a football shirt and getting photos and text published in books! I’m very grateful to all the talented people I’ve collaborated with to make this happen 💪🏿.

Lots of young budding creatives ask me for advice, so going into 2023 I think it’s important to be transparent.

Most of my time as a freelancer is spent chasing up late or incorrect payments, which completely illegitimises any sense of accomplishment for the jobs themselves. At the start of 2022 I literally did a talk at a university about the pitfalls of freelancing, for them to not pay for that talk in the timeframe agreed. I remember most of my “biggest” projects through the prism of the respective fiasco around getting paid. I don’t remember many of them with any fondness for this reason. Towards the end of this year I got a full time 9-5 job for the first time in my adult life. Being free of the constant disrespect that creatives of all disciplines are frequently subject to, means more to me than anything else and I feel much happier!

None of this is to discourage anyone from pursuing a career in the arts. But I think those of us who get asked for guidance by younger people owe it to them to be honest so I’d like to enter the new year doing that.

All the best for 2023 💥

Being part of the history of African photography 🤝 writing about it.

Thrilled to have finally got my hands on a copy of “An Alternative History of Photography” for which I wrote an exert on Malian photographer Malick Sidibé. It sits nicely with another book feature from earlier in the year when one of my photos was selected for “FACETIME: A History of the Photographic Portrait”.

Studying photography for my undergrad was fantastic and the quality of lecturing was very high, but I felt the practitioner pool was quite Euro-centric. In the years since it’s been great to see a diversification of the photography we see. Through this year we’ve showcased great projects in this vein from and .photos and my friend .co.uk’s “Cast No Shadow” project is an incredible insight into MENA culture. I’d recommend checking them all out👏

Last week I photographed my good friend at her home to accompany her first person essay “I said what I said” about why nurses are striking for . This morning I got the nice news that one of the portraits was selected to feature on . Obviously I’d prefer for her to just get paid properly and have adequate working conditions, but even my photography isn’t good enough to change government policy. In any case you can read her article on the site now.
