There’s something fascinating about how ideas take shape, isn’t there?

Julia () first saw someone working with eggshells on Pinterest, but where theirs were left rough and rustic, she saw something else entirely. Each of her pieces is painstakingly refined: edges painted gold, colours drawn from the Devon sea, and layers upon layers of texture that catch the light beautifully.

We photographed in her studio yesterday morning, where the light poured in like a tide. A quiet kind of magic, watching her bring those tiny shells to life.

This business didn’t start with a plan.
It started after redundancy — with a camera, a bit of courage, and a promise to rebuild.

It’s taken graft, patience, and a lot of Devon light, but bit by bit it’s becoming something I’m really proud of.

What began as a way to start again has become the thing that’s rebuilding me.

Slightly different post today. We went to the Beyond Van Gogh experience at Westpoint in Exeter yesterday as my birthday treat, and while I shared a few snippets on stories, it deserves a proper spot here. (It’s on until the end of the month and I totally recommend you go, especially if you haven’t had this immersive gallery experience yet)

There was a quote that stopped me in my tracks, from a letter Vincent wrote to his brother Theo:

“What am I in the eyes of most people? A nonentity or an oddity or a disagreeable person – someone who has and will have no position in society, in short a little lower than the lowest. Very well – assuming that everything is indeed like that, then through my work I’d like to show what there is in the heart of such an oddity, such a nobody.”

It hit me how much of creativity is just that, quietly showing what’s in your heart, even when you’re unsure how it’ll be seen.

Yesterday was a reminder of why I create, and why I keep showing up, for the love of it, for connection, for proof of being here.

Photography has always been a thread in my life, something I shared with my brother, and something that’s helped me rebuild since losing him. These days, it means more than just taking a beautiful picture. It’s about proof, that you were here, that you matter, that being you is worth documenting. That’s what drives me now, creating honest, meaningful photos that remind people of their place in the world. Because showing up as yourself is a kind of legacy too.
I’m going to the Van Gogh experience at Westpoint in Exeter as a little birthday treat today and it’s reminding me of how we both loved Frameless in London, that feeling of stepping inside the art, surrounded by colour and light. It’s feeling like coming home to something we shared.

There’s nothing “posed” about this — just a real little moment of love, squish, and cheeky determination. 💋

When I photograph families, this is exactly what I’m looking for. Not the perfect outfits or everyone smiling at the camera at the same time — but connection. The little gestures that tell your story, the faces you pull, the warmth that fills the in-between seconds.

Because honestly? Perfect photos don’t mean much if they don’t feel like you.

It’s about connection, not perfection. ❤️

Every artist I’ve ever photographed has apologised for their studio.
The paint splatters, the half-finished pieces, the chaos mid-project.

But what I see is creativity in action.
Proof of ideas taking shape, hands that make, minds that won’t stop imagining.

You don’t need a spotless studio or perfect lighting, just you, doing what you love.
That’s where the story lives. 💛

Ilfracombe will be getting ready to hunker down for winter soon… the harbour quietens, shutters close, boats are lifted out of the harbour and onto the car park, and the town braces itself for the potential Atlantic storms. It’s a very different place from the summer buzz, and honestly, I think I love it more this way. Faded ropes, salt-worn railings, sea air that’s equal parts wild and grounding.

Total thalassophile over here, and happy about it 🌊

Back in August, I photographed Steph, her sister, her daughters and her granddaughter, three generations of love and laughter, all coming together to create a special gift for Steph’s parents’ Diamond Wedding Anniversary.

Keeping these photos under wraps until now hasn’t been easy, but seeing their reaction made it so worth it. Sixty years of love, what a legacy 💎

(Spoiler: apparently not me 😅)
