In just under two weeks, the NEMI Workshop at NTNU - Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet in Trondheim will bring together the electron microscopy community to explore the transition from traditional TEM to automated, high-throughput “big data” workflows.

We are especially pleased that attendees will get hands-on experience using Merlin detectors as part of advanced workflows spanning:

🔹 3D ED and 4D-STEM
🔹 Automated acquisition with tools such as instamatic and PyJEM
🔹 Data processing using Jana/PETS2, pyxem and HyperSpy

We are pleased to see Quantum Detectors MerlinEM featured in a new ACS Nano paper from EPFL researchers studying VO₂ switches. The authors report that SPED data were acquired using a MerlinEM direct detection camera, as part of a workflow combining TEM, SPED, EELS, AFM and electrical analysis.

This matters because it shows MerlinEM supporting the kind of advanced phase mapping and structural analysis needed in publication-grade materials and device research.

When detector technology is trusted in one of the world’s most demanding environments, it says something powerful about the platform behind it.

It is exciting to see CERN Timepix technology playing a role in Artemis II, helping monitor the radiation environment inside the Orion spacecraft on humanity’s return journey towards the Moon.

At Quantum Detectors, that same spirit of innovation underpins Merlin T4, built on the Timepix4 ASIC for advanced event-based and time-resolved electron microscopy.

Space exploration and electron microscopy are very different frontiers, but both depend on detector technology that can perform when the science, environment and expectations are pushing the limits.
