Today I reworked another image I'd taken that same day of Slemish.. This was taken with the Fuji. Using a filter from "Pattakespictures." I caught myself thinking about what others would like to see and was reminded to process it for me. So this is it. As I like it. This was what it felt like on the day. A quite day of reflection, I just spotted this view of Slemish through the trees and wrestled the car to a stop at the side of the road.

Its not a view of Slemish I'm used to, but I liked it.

So I’ve had my new camera a few months now and for the first time yesterday I have started to feel comfortable using it. I’ve always chosen well and also never felt the need for full-frame, but I was starting to think I’d bought a clanger this time.

I’m starting to think that as I get older it’s taking a lot longer for things to sink in lol 😝

I've just made this my FB cover image and I wanted to post the full photo as well.

The very first landscape I ever remember seeing was a photograph by local Ballymena photographer, . Jack was mainly known as a wedding and portrait photographer and he and my father were good friends for many years.

I only got to know Jack as he photographed me for a prayer card and then was my wedding photographer back in 1986. As my dad returned to photographing weddings, I assisted him and Jack (recently retired) would come along for a day out. I would later take over from my dad, and both of them would then accompany me. It was a great opportunity to watch Jack work and I learned a lot from him.

However, I remember seeing a photograph that he took of Slemish Mountain, famous as the place where Saint Patrick was a herded pigs while a slave in Ireland. Slemish was so often visible if you were driving around the outskirts of the town, a constant in your visage. And so through Jack's work, it stuck with me. When I moved overseas to work, I took a copy of his image with me.... to remind me of home.

I have since lost that old photograph, but I often thought about going myself and trying to recreate the shot. This was my best effort. And so I dedicate this to his memory. Hard to believe that he passed away some 10 years ago next month. Jack was always so encouraging and saw a better photographer in me that I did. I hope he would be pleased with this image.

So I saw this poster of the new season of Mayfair Witches and as I’ve been experimenting with copilot and ChatGPT I thought I’d show the guided journey I went on in an attempt to create an image as close to the original. I started with a simple headshot of the actress and by describing how I wanted the image to look you can see the progression. I won’t bore you with the minutia…. But you have to careful curate every step and be mindful as AI has a tendency of changing things you don’t tell it to…

Earlier today, I posted a link to the page of the fantastic , a Christian artist and his explanation of some of his work.

I referenced using some software, in this case it was Canva, as I was creating imagery for our wedding last year. Canva had an AI feature, so I experimented. I asked it to create a number of paintings based on my own landscape photography but asked it to create them in the style of Fujimura.

These are the results. Do any of you like them? If so, which one do you like most? I can see both influences, but my experience so far is that AI creations are unruly and if you dare to ask it to tweak or amend an image, in all likelihood, you will also lose other elements that you were quite happy with.

I do like them, but that's just me. My opinion and 80p will buy you a Turkish Delight.

In this particular moment in my faith walk, I've been considering the concept of those of us who have experienced healing as becoming 'broken healers' ourselves who can speak into others' lives to help them find personal healing and spiritual redemption. Brennan Manning has been much quoted as well as others.

Some time ago, I was experimenting with AI and became aware of an artist called Makoto Fujimura, a Christian contemporary artist who specialises in what he calls "slow art." This particular style that he is talking about on this page is "Kintsugi"the art of mending what is broken. Fujimura speaks to the restorative/redemptive process. There is a video on the link below that explains this beautifully.

I was amazed at what AI created when I asked it to create an image based on my landscape photography and Makoto Fujimura's work. I'll share some of that separately.

I think as a photographer it’s important to be decisive. Maybe you’ve got 10 great photos from a shoot…don’t post them all. Pick one that moves you and share it with the world. Pick one that transports you to a moment in time…. That evokes a memory…

This week I received something I’ve been looking forward to for a while.
Paul Sanders book “Still” is about a contemplative and mindful approach to photography. My own mind has resonated with this for some time now so I’m really looking forward to diving or maybe ‘immersing’ myself into this.

It was also a lovely touch to receive a complementary fine art print with the book. Need to get it framed now :)
