The young boy on the left is my maternal grandfather with his mother, Ellen, and younger brother. This is the only photo I have of Ellen. I’ve restored and colourised it as best I could and then let AI work its magic. AI does tend to make subjects more attractive so it won’t be completely accurate. With better quality images I have a technique to manipulate AI images back to more closely resemble people but this photo is too low-res for that. Nonetheless, I’m happy that it’s close enough on that score and, additionally, it has recreated the ambience and mood of what must have been a lovely family day in the countryside. The photo was taken circa 1925.

I've had a few emails and PMs about the AI I use. Well, it's KREA AI and it's free to use. The enquiries were generally along the lines of wanting to restore old photos themselves, which I encourage. However, for anyone wanting to do this please don't think you can just upload an old photo and have AI work it's magic (unless the picture is in good condition to start with). Also, if it's a black and white photo bear in mind that the colourising options (not available in KREA at the moment) can lead to very odd colourings. Preparing a photo for AI is crucial: the more info it has the better its output. In the example attached, the photo had to be repaired. Then the research of that battalions uniform colour, then the manual colourising of the entire photo. Only when that was done was the photo ready for it's final AI polish. AI is very good but with many old and damaged photos there's a lot of hard work required prior to AI.

An example of how traditional restoration techniques and the power of AI can transform some very low quality photos into very useable images. The original needed a lot of work to get it ready for the AI software to polish it off, but it goes to show that it can be done with patience and know-how.

I have one photo of one of my Great Grand Aunts, Annie, with her husband. The resolution of it is 500 by 483 pixels; about as crap as you can get. I came across it on a genealogy site, so it is what it is and it’s better than nothing. I wondered if, with modern software, it could be turned into something approaching a modern photograph. It’s more of a ‘proof of concept’ really. I could have spent hours, days and weeks recreating the background and rebuilding Annie’s dress, but for this experiment I just went with a ‘recreate the mood’ approach. And here’s the result. Not perfect but I’m pleased overall.

Another from my private collection that I’m working on (I say ‘working on’ because I’ll probably keep tinkering with it). As I said before, I don’t have many photos of my paternal grandparents so I’m trying to restore the few I have as best I can. With this one the composition wasn’t very good; too much dead space on the left and my dad almost cut in half, so a rebuild of the right-hand side was needed prior to general restoration and colourization. In case anybody’s interested, that’s me as a baby being held by my mum (I’m about 3 months old there, so the photo was taken late 1965 / early 1966).
