NEXT MONDAY EVENING I'll be giving a talk ahead of this year's Ardglass Festival on 'My Photography Journey' with tips on capturing portraits, landscapes etc. The festival committee will also launch a photography competition as part of this year's festival events - a great initiative which will hopefully have local residents out with their mobiles and cameras capturing portraits, scenes and whatever else springs to mind.
The evening takes place at St. Nicholas' Primary School with a start time of 7.00 pm. Anyone interested in coming along is more than welcome - drop me a message if you'd like to come along and I might be able to arrange a lift for you.
I'll also be having a competition on the night with a landscape print up for grabs as first prize. Second prize is four season tickets for West Ham United next season!! (That's a joke by the way!!).

WIN A FAMILY PHOTOSHOOT!! I'm delighted to be teaming up with this summer when one lucky family will win a location photoshoot!! Keep an eye out for details of the competition which will be held at one of the summer meetings and which will be announced soon - last year's winner was Michael Kearney from Newry with the photoshoot taking place in autumn at Tollymore Forest Park (see photos). ONLY MY FIFTH landscape journey of the year to date as I've been so busy with my work - I needed this visit to the coast more than I can say as editing days lately have been fairly long, on a fair few occasions into the later hours of the night and even into the next morning!! Nothing better to help me de-stress and unwind and a big bonus when the light arrives!! Facebook compression affects what you see - even better as a 30x20in print!! CONFERENCE SHOOTING can be a hectic day!! Constant shooting, walking between delegates, whispering 'excuse me' countless times, scanning the room, trying not to be visible, then blocking delegates' views!! And when it's over the work is just starting, downloading, culling and editing photos which are generally required to be delivered to the client in ultra-fast time. I had the pleasure of shooting a super conference for Kainos | For Workday recently at Titanic Hotels Belfast with approx. 150 delegates in attendance from across the world for their SKO Conference. A big thanks to Nicole Traynor who made sure a few technical issues were sorted promptly which helped make capturing images from the day that bit easier. It's always appreciated when a conference organiser shows up throughout the day to make sure all is working as it should and Nicole kept herself busy, checking in on the photography side of things, and making sure all the other aspects of the conference ran smoothly too. Conditions couldn't have been any better as the conference room at the hotel is bathed in natural light - always a great help. Met some great folk, ate some nice food, got a good few steps in and fired through approx. 400 photos first thing next morning!!

I COVERED THE RECENT VISIT of the Secretary of State's visit to MJM Marine and Newry Chamber. As a member of the chamber it offered me an insight into the work being done by both businesses lobbying on behalf of local jobs and the importance of the flow of trade in the UK, Europe and worldwide. On behalf of MJM Marine CEO Gary Annett outlined the growth of the company's business to be world leaders in the field of ship outfitting. On behalf of the chamber Conor Patterson (president) and Michae Savage (CEO) spoke on the challenges facing businesses in the wider Newry area and outlined steps they felt could be taken to boost the growth of much-needed jobs in the area aligned with support to businesses and the need to invest in housing, education and opportunities for young people. Local businessmen and women were in attendance and spoke of their concerns relating to the economy, jobs and opportunities for future growth. Together, all put forward a powerful, articulated case which Hilary Benn listened to and spoke on - if you are a local business in the Newry area it might be a good idea to think about joining the chamber - they are working hard behind the scenes and supporting businesses in ways we don't always see as I witnessed recently.

I'VE SPENT YEARS PERFECTING my craft as a photographer, understanding light, exposure, aperture, shutter speeds, white balance, Kelvin (temperature of light), ISO speeds, what lenses suit each style of photography, calibration, flash settings, studio settings - each thing I have digested has made me the photographer I am today. I've appreciated the opportunity to work with many highly skilled photographers, and creatives within the industry at the top of their game (MUAs, stylists, creators, etc). Editing an image is a skill that goes hand in hand with capturing an image - if you don't know how to make your image better by editing you are not getting the best from your work. Every skilled tradesman must know their tools and be able to craft a perfect piece through the knowledge they have acquired and put in to practice. However, Ai is starting to change that and making editing a faster and less tedious process - and available to the masses. It has played a small role in the creation of this image as the skills I have learned over the years have largely been used to get to the final image - where it takes us is anyones guess but photography and many more industries are set for revolutionary change and we will all have to adapt - Ai will affect the low-end, generic stock photography side of the industry - it won't replace the experience of a skilled photographer offering a quality experience to clients collaborating towards a high-end finished image. There will still be work for those who are high-skilled in the field of photography - meaning there's still exciting times ahead for the industry hashtag hashtag hashtag hashtag hashtag
