A first for me last week — drone flights at sea!

I carried out my first drone take-off and landing from a small boat — not once, but twice!

With the expert support of Mark from SkyCam Grantham, we carefully planned every detail:

✅ Required shots
✅ Risk assessments
✅ Pre-site & on-site surveys
✅ Drone settings
✅ …and even sea sickness tablets!

This was no easy task. The drone's sensors can struggle with reflections off the water, the boat was constantly moving with the swell (despite being anchored), and the landing area was very limited. But thanks to solid planning and the right equipment, we got the job done — and no drones were harmed in the making!

I can’t share footage just yet (awaiting client release), but I’m proud to say everything went smoothly.

With the right prep, even the trickiest jobs are possible.

Yesterday two of our professional pilots undertook a challenging shoot off the Scarborough coast. Paul Ewbank (The SkyCam Hull) piloted his DJI Air 2S whilst Mark Hallam (SkyCam Grantham) acted as spotter.

Despite the challenges involved in operating a drone from a small boat, the shoot went well and we ended up with some great footage and a happy client.
