Two years ago, I found myself in Sarajevo, walking the sunlit streets with an incredible woman and photographer, Aida Redzepagic.

These portraits were part of a documentary exploring the Balkan conflict and its lasting impact. That day was full of stories of the past, resilience, and hope for the future. We shared Bosnian coffee while listening as Aida reflected on her journey and her beautiful country.

Thank you, Aida, for your generosity, your stories, and your warmth. It was an absolute pleasure to meet you and to photograph you.

That’s me! Yes, dressed like a mime, slipping into other personas in the purest Claude Cahun or Cindy Sherman style. I took this self-portrait a few years ago for a college project during the pandemic, when I began facing my midlife crisis (which is still ongoing) and the most mundane fears came for an unwanted visit.

I remember how much I used to love thinking about the future—who I would become in a few years, the people I’d meet, the adventures I’d have, and where I would be: Madrid? London? Lisbon, perhaps? But these days, I don’t feel particularly excited about the future. It has become a bit scary now that I’m fully aware of the limited time we have in this space called life. That’s why, instead of dreaming about the future, I try to focus on the present, to enjoy it, and to be grateful for the miracle of having one more day to keep learning, growing and sharing experiences with the people around me.

Looking through my old files, I stumbled upon this picture—one I hold dear. It took me back to a winter afternoon in the college studios with my lovely Kay. We were experimenting with lighting setups, laughing, and sharing dreams and confidences. I can’t think of a photo that better captures how I see her and the warmth and joy I feel when she’s around.
