The Royal Regiment of Scotland (SCOTS) performs guard duties at the Palace of Holyroodhouse because they are Scotland's senior line infantry regiment and the primary custodians of the nation's military heritage.

Specifically, Balaklava Company, 5th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (5 SCOTS)—which is permanently stationed in Edinburgh—is the primary unit tasked with these public ceremonial duties.

Whenever the King or any other member of the Royal Family is officially in residence in Scotland—most notably during the annual "Royal Week" (Holyrood Week) in July—the regiment is called upon to protect the Sovereign. They mount the guard at both the Palace of Holyroodhouse and Edinburgh Castle.

The Royal Company of Archers is the Sovereign's official bodyguard in Scotland, a prestigious and primarily ceremonial unit currently known as the King's Bodyguard for Scotland. Based in Edinburgh, the unit was originally established in 1676 as a private archery club. It was elevated to its royal status during the historic 1822 visit of King George IV to Scotland.

They wear a unique dark green field uniform featuring a Balmoral bonnet adorned with an eagle feather (or multiple feathers depending on officer rank).

Members parade carrying traditional longbows, accompanied by a side-slung short Roman-style sword and three tucked arrows.

The Royal Company performs its functions whenever the Monarch travels within 5 miles of Edinburgh. Key responsibilities include:

Royal Attendance: Guarding the King at the annual Royal Garden Party held at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

Lined the steps of St Giles' Cathedral for the installation of the Knights of the Thistle and took part in the late Queen Elizabeth II's lying-in-state vigils.

“Scotland the Brave!” 4 SCOTS Pipes and Drums performing at Edinburgh Castle to mark the 20th Anniversary of The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Formed on 28 March 2006, The Royal Regiment of Scotland brought together Scotland's proud infantry regiments into one. On that day, the antecedent regimental colours were lowered, and a single new colour was raised, symbolising unity, strength, and a shared future while preserving the traditions and heritage of those who came before us.
