Unmissable things to do in Grassmarket, Edinburgh. ⁠
⁠
The Grassmarket is a historic area in Edinburgh Old Town with a weird and wonderful history. Now, it is a bustling area full of people, independent businesses and great things to do. ⁠
⁠
1. Admire Victoria Street (pictured above!) this street has always been a place of commerce and was once home to some of Old Towns most comfortable residents. A colourful, busy street down which your imagination can wander. ⁠
⁠
2. Take in the views of the Castle at the Vennel. ⁠
⁠
3. Go Vintage shopping - we are absolute suckers for some 70 flares. If we need some new clothes, Grassmarket is our first stop - we always visit our two favourite shops - Armstrongs and Torn Vintage. ⁠

4. Get stocked up for all your spells at Black Moon Botanica. Here you’ll find herbs, candles, crystals and witchy books and art. ⁠
⁠
5. Enjoy the best Ice Cream in Edinburgh at Mary’s Milk Bar - there will be a queue but it’ll be worth it. They always have two really great vegan options as well!⁠

‭6. If you happen to be in town on Saturday, you need to visit the Saturday market that’s on. Here you’ll find lots of local delicious treats, gifts and some great food (the paella is always a big hit!)

One of the main reasons people elope is the freedom to make unconventional choices. ⁠
⁠
When these two got in touch they let us know that they didn’t want their official ceremony photographed. Instead, what was important to them was some quiet time exchanging rings in private as the sun rose to enjoy the enchanting ruins of Portencross Castle, the views across to the Isle of Arran and some time with their dog.

This was exactly how we spent the morning - let this be your sign that theres no ‘have to’s’ or ‘should’s’ when you elope in Scotland!

Last year we had the pleasure of photographing B&T in Dean Village. ⁠
⁠
This is such a special place in Edinburgh, it exists in its own little realm below the busy city streets of Edinburgh West End & Stockbridge. ⁠
⁠
In the past, Dean Village was considered way out in the country - back when the city only existed only around the Royal Mile - and was the countryside retreat for the cities wealthy inhabitants. It was a place of rest and relaxation among the trees and beside the bubbling river. Nowadays, Dean Village is very much incorporated into the city of Edinburgh but retains its hamlet-like charm. Make sure you stop by if you’re visiting!

I’m Abi - I’m your photo-taking, email-answering, colour-grading side of Allta. I’m a scorpio sun, sag moon and gemini rising which means I’m all about documenting love!! When I’m not behind the camera I’m often found with my nose in a book. If I’m not in my reading nook I’ll probably be somewhere in the highlands looking for beautiful glens & stone circles.

I’m Darren! I’ll be shooting your video and designing your experience every step of the way. I’m going to go on fifteen tangents about Scottish history and folklore while we’re on our session and make nearly as many dad-jokes until you tell me to stop! Oh and I may need to climb a tree or step in a river in our time together, but I swear it’s worth it for the shot!⁠

What is an elopement?

Elopements are legally binding - just like traditional weddings! - provided you have a registered celebrant, witnesses & your marriage schedule! Though there are some key differences:

- elopements tend to have a smaller guest list (usually about 10 or under!)
- elopements can take place outdoors in epic locations like Glencoe and the highlands
- elopements give you more flexibility. Without a venue imposed timeline you can opt for sunrise ceremonies, wild swims, picnics and lots of adventure

Last summer we had the absolute pleasure of photographing H & J who travelled from Canada with their wedding clothes to have some portraits taken on their honeymoon in Edinburgh.

We met them just before the sun came up at the bottom of Arthur’s Seat and explored the park at sunrise.

Our couples always love that there’s a little bit of the highland mountain vibes here in Edinburgh that they can enjoy and have the most romantic portraits at 🤍

Helen and Aaran chose such a great spot for their elopement 🎉

You’d be forgiven for not knowing where Loch Migdale is, even if you’d lived in Scotland your whole life. It’s a very quiet Loch tucked away in the north east of the Scottish Highlands, a stunningly still wee Loch surrounded by a glorious woodland full of iconic Scottish pine trees, the perfect place to day “I do” to your best friend. 🌲

We absolutely adore this job, but it wouldn’t be the same without people like Caitlin.

We photographed her wedding to the lovely and talented Ste last year and thankfully made a friend for life 🎉

She’s been a massive support and a rock while we worked our heart and souls into our big announcement, put us at ease through all the imposter syndromes and unease, always putting a smile on our face 🌞

We were fortunate enough to get these shots in the beautiful Glencoe during a wee turadh (my favourite Gaelic word meaning a wee break in the clouds 😊)

Rannoch Moor is a real favourite of ours, it’s often described as one of the last truly wild places in the UK because of its vastness and awe-inspiring beauty.

The moor is so vast in fact, that an old piece of folklore suggested that a man once transformed into a women and lived an entire life (met someone, got married, the whole nine yards!!) on a single boat journey from one side of the moor to the other! But maybe that’s a blog post for another day 😂

All we know is we’re thankful for the longer days coming so we can squeeze every drop of magic out of this gorgeous setting!
