Last night the annual Torchlight procession kicked off in Scotland's capital marking the beginning of the biggest party around, Edinburgh's Hogmanay. Led by Shetland’s very own iconic South Mainland Up Helly Aa’ Jarl Squad, this event signals the start of the new year festivities as Scotland wards off the cold of winter with a fiery procession.

This year saw 15,000 people attend and over 10,000 people spectate the event as the Glencorse band helped lead the procession with their pipers and drummers. 2025 also sees CNN broadcasting the festivities to watchers around the world really cementing Edinburgh's Hogmanay as *the* party to be at.

Craig Gordon was given the honour of leading the crowds up onto the Royal Mile this year with the Scotland and Hearts goalkeeper having had a successful season so far with both teams.

A month ago I went on what has to be my craziest trip ever, leaving Edinburgh at 0200 on the 12th of October and by 1000 UK time I was touching down in Iceland and then by 2200 UK time on the 13th I was back in Edinburgh, why?

Well for this absolute beauty, TF FIU Hekla Aurora, arguably one of the most beautiful planes not only in Icelandair's fleet but also in the world. Depicting the Aurora Borealis dancing above Iceland it really is a gorgeous aircraft. This plane holds an extremely special place in my heart and there was tears in my eyes as I watched her climb out one final time after the farewell flight.

Unfortunately at 32 years old the time came for retirement but Icelandair weren't going to let her say goodbye quietly. Organising a special farewell flight around Iceland. It was an absolute pleasure to fly with them on this very special flight and huge thanks go out to the staff who were behind this event.

Scotland recorded their largest ever win margin at murrayfield against the United States during the first match of the Quilter Series. What a way to kick off 100 year celebrations at murrayfield.

Scotland stormed to an 85-0 victory over the American visitors as an absolute masterclass on rugby was delivered with textbook precision and ex*****on.

Next up for the Scots is the Kiwis from New Zealand, a fierce foe but I'm sure Scotland will come out fighting.

It's world photography day today so I thought given that this is a photography page I should probably post something.

I'm hoping to become more regular in posting over the next couple of months as I try to find a steady work life balance .I've spent the last couple of months not focussed on content and likes and instead taking life a bit slower and going the scenic route through life.

I'm now in my final masters year of uni, or as I tell my friends, one more year of insanity to go. So that is going to be a big focus but I'm hopeful I'll be able to get out and about with the camera between exams and courseworks. Oh and the dreaded Dissertation.

In the meantime enjoy a selection of photos from the year so far, as you can see it's been a busy but very enjoyable one.

Last night was the awards night for the Young Railway Photographer of The Year 2025 and I'm extremely pleased to announce that my portfolio was awarded 3rd place in the 19-25 category.

There were hundreds of entries and thousands of images but my portfolio was awarded 3rd place and is now on display at NRM York till the end of the year and NRM Shildon till August. My images will also feature in a book produced to mark the completion which is immense;

I was also honoured to be asked to have one of my images converted into a tactile version for those with reduced vision, making the showcase more accessible to all. This is also on display at York NRM.

Honestly a day later and I'm back in Edinburgh now it still hasn't sunken in. I have so many people to thank but most importantly I have to thank my family and my partner for their constant support and encouragement to keep pursuing my passion and my love for the railways. For putting up with my crazy adventures and non stop gallivanting around, their support truly means the world.

And with that my chase of the Great Britain XVii railtour is complete, 3 days of chasing across the Tyne Valley, Kingdom of Fife, Scottish Highlands and Edinburgh. 1000 miles covered by road, rail and bus, it's safe to say I've had an adventure.

The Railway Touring Company has done a fantastic job this year with a great selection of locomotives pounding the rails with; 60163 Tornado, 34067 Tangmere being the guests for my chase across Scotland. 45407 Lancashire fusilier also pulled the tour from Wick to Inverness while I was having a rest day.

As day 5 of the Great Britain XVii tour begins Tornado re-enters the Kingdom of Fife for the first time in many years after undergoing major overhaul and upgrades. It's absolutely fantastic to see this powerhouse back up in Scotland.

Today the tour navigates the Kingdom of Fife and the picturesque Highlands as it works it's way to Inverness, let the chase, begin.

Tangmere, 34067 Battle of Britain class, is seen rolling off of the Cumbrian coast and into Carlisle for a short break during day 4 of the GB XVII railtour, a wonderful week and a half long railtour put on by The Railway Touring Company.

Day 4 sees passengers traversing the Cumbrian coast followed by an afternoon navigating the Tyne Valley before powering down the East Coast Mainline to Edinburgh for the night.

Also seen is Tornado, 60163 A1 class, being hauled through Carlisle by a West Coast railways Class 37 as they head to Edinburgh in preparation for day 5 of the tour.

HRH The Princes Royal arrived at Hollyrood Palace on a warm spring afternoon today in Edinburgh. She then departed by road to a destination further afield.

Warmer and brighter days ahead, spring is now here in Scotland, with the short days behind us now, we've survived another winter and we can now look forward to longer days and better weather. Possibly even some sun 🫢
