Andrea Thomson Photography I'm an Edinburgh family, small business and small wedding photographer.

No studio stuff here - just natural, fun photos taken in your home or out in the wilds of Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. I specialise in taking natural, fun photos of families, children and babies as well as photos for small businesses and small weddings. When it comes to family photos I love to capture a bit of your every day life, because these are the moments that mean the most.

If I’m totally honest, I hesitated before taking on this job. But Mabel was insistent she needed to freshen up both her LinkedIn and Tinder profiles and I was the person to do it. I wouldn’t normally say this about a client — at times she was a right bitch (see what I did there 😉) — but mostly she was just lovely and good fun to photograph. Unlike many of my clients, she wanted to get her photos done before she went for her hair appointment (which is today). And she wanted to show that while she’s an independent, modern sort of girl she has a vulnerable side as well, and I think we achieved that. And if you’ve read this far and have a favourite lemme know as I actually took these for our local dog calendar and need to choose one 😅🐾♥️

This is my second portrait for Vintage Vibes Edinburgh “Icons of Edinburgh” project. Edinburgh is the loneliest city for older people in the UK, which is a very sad stat, and Vintage Vibes is a charity that helps tackle and prevent loneliness and isolation for people over 60 through changing perceptions surrounding ageing and building friendships and communities. Please give them a follow.

And this is Pat, who made a big point to tell me that she’s not lonely. She was super lovely and walks between 10k and 20k steps per day with her walker. And she hates getting her photo taken so I’m doubly happy she trusted me to do it.

My own personal challenge with this project is asking strangers if I can take their portrait, massively uncomfortable for me but I’m working on it!

On a misty July afternoon these two gorgeous humans and 100 of their nearest and dearest gathered in their garden to witness the official blending of their families, although they’ve been perfectly blended for quite a while already. It doesn’t happen often but their vows and speeches made me tear up a bit. All so really, really lovely ♥️.

Dolly and Yayoi in one week 🥲💔. I was lucky to see Dolly Parton perform live during a taping of The David Letterman Show—pre-smartphone so no photos. And I had the privilege of seeing Yayoi Kusama’s work a few times—the retrospective at The Tate Modern (I went three times between 2021 and 2023), an installation at The Hirshorn Museum in D.C. and one of her pumpkins in Kensington Gardens. Her work was totally immersive, playful and different every time you saw it, so unique and always ahead of her time. Both of these powerhouses will be missed. RIP
