I have always seen art and photography as my career, but I felt I needed to have a job to earn money.

I spent many years working full time and even had 4 part-time jobs at one point to earn money.

I tried to keep up all my artistic mediums, painting drawing, mixed media college, photography, and not able to do any thoroughly.

I longed to be able to combine my skills, but this took a long time to figure out.

I started out as a film photographer and was reluctant to switch to digital photography. Once I did, it was another big step to move away from straight photography, but it opened up the opportunity to combine all my skills.

I discovered a special effects technique and an idea that allowed me to use my composition skills. I started making objects for these images as well and the process of creating these images felt quite painter.

More recently I have started using smoke effects and manipulating the shape of the smoke into shapes which helps bring in my other skills too.

Witches. The Devil. A King convinced that dark forces were conspiring against him.

Step into one of the most unsettling chapters of Scotland’s history.

The Witches, the Devil and a King collection explores the fear, superstition and extraordinary beliefs that surrounded the Scottish witch trials — from secret meetings with the Devil to hares raising spirits and attacking the King’s ship.

Each fine art photograph takes a fragment of that history and transforms it into something haunting, beautiful and thought-provoking.

Because sometimes the strangest stories are the ones that really happened.

Behind every photograph is a story waiting to be told.

For me, it all began with a simple deck of cards featuring Scottish monarchs—and a spark of creativity. ✨

That spark led to the creation of Scotland’s Chequered Throne collection, blending history, culture, and art into a unique storytelling experience.

Witches, The Devil and a King explores one of the darkest chapters in Scottish history - the North Berwick witch trials and the obsessions of King James VI.

Rendered in black and white, each piece uses smoke to conjure the atmosphere of suspicion, superstition and control that defined the era.

From the Auld Kirk gatherings to the spectral hares said to block the King’s path, the series reflects how fear and imagination shaped truth.

This haunting, evolving collection invites reflection on power, belief and the human mind.

Over time my photography has developed.

I still enjoy using photography to create something unique and different, but my approach has evolved.

Initially, I focused heavily on experimentation and aesthetic outcomes and, while I still love experimenting and learning new techniques, I now use these tools to tell a story.

The story itself has become the driving force behind my photography, rather than simply the effect or technique.

Each image is meticulously planned, from object selection to lighting. However, sometimes adjustments are needed during the process, either in composition or technique.

Over time, I have refined my approach, learning how to achieve the best results with minimal post-processing.

A great example is Robert III: Absentee King. This image features an empty throne, with chess pieces representing waiting subjects and a floating mirror reflecting his playing card, symbolising his distant and ineffective rule.

It’s the only image in the collection where the king’s chess piece is missing - because he was, quite literally, absent.

The Witches, the Devil and a King greeting card collection is now available.

Each design draws on the chilling tales of the North Berwick witch trials - where fears of witches communing with the devil gripped Scotland under the reign of James VI. From witches dancing in graveyards to storms said to be conjured at sea, the haunting black-and-white imagery, enhanced with swirling smoke effects, captures the drama of this turbulent era.

On the back of every card you’ll find the story behind the image, making each one both a striking keepsake and a glimpse into history.

Available now in sets of three or six - discover the collection on the website today https://shop.nancypinkerton.com/products/greeting-cards-set-of-6-various-collections

I’ve recently added a new service working with artists to photograph their work, which has come from so many conversations about how difficult it can be to get images that actually feel true to the piece.

Most of the time you’re working with whatever light you have, taking a few quick photos so you’ve got something to upload or send off, and although it does the job, it often doesn’t quite capture the colour, detail or overall feel in the way you’d hoped.

What I’m offering is a more considered approach, where we take the time to photograph your work properly, with controlled lighting and a consistent setup, so you come away with a set of images that sit well together and can be used confidently across your website, applications, prints and anywhere else they’re needed.

If it’s something you’ve been meaning to sort, you can find more about it here:
