A beautiful Whooper Swan I was surprised to see alone on a local loch at the end of last month, perhaps separated from the flock which would likely have left the UK a month previous, headed back to their breeding grounds in Iceland.

Fulmars will always, always be a special bird to me, for it was they that captured my first glimpse of the true, wild spirit of nature as I perched on a clifftop at Gairloch in the NW Scottish highlands nearly four decades ago. They inspired my love of seabirds, the gatekeepers of the mystery of far-flung oceans and vast expanses of apparent nothingness – their world, imagined, colliding with ours in fleeting glimpses, glimpses into another one will never truly experience. Many pass them off as just seagulls, but they are in fact cousins of the albatross, those magnificent ocean wanderers, which fulmars are also. If you see one, watch its seemingly endless figure-of-eight flight patterns, best witnessed on a windy day, and tell me they aren’t enjoying themselves!

After the excitement of Magnus the Walrus along the Moray Firth, where can you go? Here’s a couple of toads doing that thing they do in late-March and they weren’t self-conscious about it at all, so go on, have a look.

This young, 8-foot long male Walrus has made himself into a celebrity over the last week or so, travelling up and down the Moray Firth here in Scotland, stopping by various harbours for rest where he would haul out onto a pontoon or walkway overnight. This was the scene at Findochty harbour yesterday, near to where I live, and he continued on from here today, hopefully back north to cooler climes where he belongs. Whether just a curious traveler or a victim of environmental change, no-one can be sure – or where he will pop up next.
