Layers of Reflection: The Making of Brick Rd 🧱

My art starts out with a Concept: Finding the Yellow Brick Road 🌟
The title and underlying philosophy of the piece stem from the idea that 'every failure is a brick in your yellow brick road to success' 💛. The distressed, multi-toned brick facade isn't just an aesthetic choice; it represents the obstacles, missteps, and hard-won lessons we encounter along our paths. By merging the portrait with the weathered wall, the piece explores how our experiences literally shape who we become, turning raw setbacks into the very foundation we walk on 🛤️.
Art rarely starts out as a clean, finished vision ✨. Often, it is a process of accumulation—building up layers of texture, meaning, and emotion until a piece begins to tell its own story 📖. Brick Rd is a mixed-media digital painting that evolved through several distinct stages, blending self-portraiture with urban decay photos that I take of the streets, combining with my painted textures, and digital manipulation 🎨.
1. The Foundation: Capturing the Self-Portrait 📸
Every piece in this series begins with a raw, honest photograph - a quiet, contemplative pose with hands framing the face 👤. Shot in simple lighting to capture stark forms and shadows, this initial monochrome layer provided the human anchor for everything that followed.
2. Weaving the Textures: Merging Form and Decay 🧱
Once the foundational portrait was set, the real transformation began in Photoshop. The concept relied heavily on juxtaposition—contrasting the vulnerability of the human face with rigid, weathered structural elements.
The Brick Overlay: I integrated images of aged, textured brickwork, treating the stone as a metaphor for resilience, barriers, and structural support 🏙️.
Painterly Washes: Hand-painted textures and distressed gradients were introduced to soften the digital edges, infusing rich ochres, deep purples, and earthy greens into the composition 🖌️
