FearPhotography James Fear: Wedding Photographer - Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, the Cotswolds and Beyond... Even at such an early age I knew these books were very special.

I come from a strong background in the arts, but from a very early age photography has always been my uppermost passion. This passion for photography started when I was very young (maybe five or six) when I stumbled upon my father’s collection of photography books. I still remember seeing them high on a shelf out of reach, presumably there for that exact purpose. With a little ingenuity and fully

aware I was being naughty I managed to get to them...

The books my father had lovingly collected were by the likes of Arno Minkkinen and Jacques Lartigue as well as the greatest photojournalist of all time: Henri Cartier-Bresson. Telling me something about the world I would otherwise never have known - be it the subjects, culture or just sheer beauty I came back as often as I could and was always utterly transfixed. By the time I had reached my teenage years I obsessively started to collect the photographic magazine LIFE. Again, the imagery and the ability these great photographers had of making me feel like I was there was unparalleled. Also, by this stage in my life I owned my first 'proper camera' and would often be getting told off in class for taking photographs. When my official schooling was over, I carried on to study the fine arts. This is where I left photography behind for a while and decided to concentrate on painting and illustration. Through this period I still photographed my daily events with the same passion I had when I was a child. Unfortunately, my tutor did not have the same passion as I did for photography and often told me that 'Photography is the lowest form of art'. When I finished my study of the fine arts, and still taking my tutor's words as fact, I spent the next years trying to forge out a name for myself as a painter and graphic illustrator. Like with many things in life, if the passion is not as strong as it should be, it is very hard to succeed. As the years started to roll by, I found less and less time was devoted to the arts and I started forging out a career for myself in the corporate world. It wasn't until I had to work overseas that something happened in my life which made me see the light...
..From an experience I had when I was a child I spent my adult life terrified of flying and as my business roll grew I knew this was something I must tackle. A friend of mine suggested I try hypnotherapy. I must admit I was very sceptical, but having nothing to lose I made an appointment with a local hypnotherapist Richard Parsons. I liked Richard from the second I met him and decided to continue with a 12 week program. By the tenth week something triggered and I just knew I was going to be a photographer. I can't really explain it any better, I just knew from that second what I was going to do with my life. From there, a series of events unfolded which looking back were incredibly fortunate. It's quite a crazy story and to keep my bio short all I'll say is within in six months of seeing Richard, I was no longer in my former roll and was finally a photographer. As I write my bio, and looking back, it seems crazy I did not figure out my path earlier in life. However, all the influences and circumstances which led me here have unquestionably shaped the photographer I am today. Photography's real magic for me has always been it's ability to tell the truth, yet as a photograph ages it often creates a different story in our mind. This nostalgic aspect of photography is key to how I shoot. My work will never be about fancy digital effects or the current photographic trend, but rather the pursuit of documenting the day as truthfully and as beautifully as I can. I approach wedding photography, as did many of my idols from the past, with patience and observation being key. I try to be as invisible as possible at a wedding and for the most part guests should just think I'm a friend with a camera. By working in this way, there is an intimacy and honesty to my photographs which could not be achievable otherwise. All guests, family and friends need to do from my end is relax and enjoy the day. I’m based in the beautiful Cotswold town of Cheltenham Spa and I am lucky enough to work within Cheltenham, the Cotswolds and throughout the UK. Thank you for taking the time to read my biography and for your interest in my work,

James

What a few days we’ve had hey. Feels like summer.

The weather took me straight back to Charlotte and Niall’s wedding at Ivy Lodge. Soft light, proper energy, and my first time shooting there.

Typical me, I’ve been meaning to post this for ages but never quite found the moment.

What I loved most was the contrast. Calm, elegant, easy in the morning… then straight into chaos later on. Shoes off, ties gone, everyone completely in it.

The band were unreal too, Stereo Jacks. Definitely worth a look.

That’s the thing really. I’m not after perfect or posed. Just real people having it, and me getting out of the way just enough for it to happen.

Thanks for having me, you two.

James

Dear James,

Well bloody hell…these are EPIC!!!

Thank you so much for capturing so many fabulous moments for us to keep for ever. Our friends & family are going to love them too.

Your energy on the day was amazing and you made it a breeze for two people who hate having their pictures taken. We actually look good!!

Char’s been in tears of joy, and from laughter and we’ve loved revisiting the day from your point of view. We’ll probably spend the next few days re looking again and again.

Thank you thank you thank you.

Charlotte & Niall

Natasha and Bryan’s wedding in Oxford was a proper classic from start to finish.

Oxford Town Hall setting the tone early on. Calm, elegant, everything exactly where it should be… then drifting into the Cherwell Boathouse by punt.

Genuinely one of those moments where you just step back and quietly thank the wedding gods that days like this find me. Just the two of them gliding in, everyone watching, the whole thing feeling like a scene from a film.

The rest of the day followed suit. Relaxed, beautifully put together… apart from possibly my most risky bridesmaid shot of all time.

Hope you like it, team.

Second post this week… JF is Back. Properly back.

Sanne & Nic. House. Blue skies, big smiles, absolute carnage on the dancefloor.

These two are both pilots (you didn’t need to know that, but now you do), and they threw a wedding that matched the altitude (sorry, couldn’t help it!). It was classic me this wedding - big, loads of vibe, the one and only plus bags of style, smiles and sillyness.

The Function Band. If you know, you know. If you don’t - the triple platinum, diamond-encrusted pinnacle of wedding bands. No warm up, no gentle easing in. Just straight into it, dancefloor packed, and it stays that way. All day and all night long. Beans given! Sanne & Nic — thank you for having me. This one’s going straight into the hall of fame.

“The weather’s been alright, hey…

These were taken at Ryan & Laura’s wedding at . Back there again next week. Ridiculous.

Sun out, everyone spilling outside, drinks flowing. Grabbed a few low light portraits and then appeared out of nowhere with his sax and just like that, the whole thing lifted… and it was already pretty lifted.

With days like this I don’t need to force anything. Just stay out the way and let it unfold.

Ryan, Laura, their friends and family absolutely had it. No overthinking, get the right suppliers in, trust the process, have the best time. Done.

Did the weather help? Possibly. But honestly, I don’t doubt it would’ve been just as mega if it was hailing.”

“WOW!

We just wanted to email you to thank and tell you how delighted we are with not only the photos but the fun and laughter you brought to our day.

You have captured nothing but fun, love and happiness in what the day truly was and the photos you have developed are beyond our expectations!

We have probably looked through these photos 50 times and come across more each time!

So, thank you for ‘building the tension’, preventing the ‘tea potting’, ‘bringing your vibe’ and ‘giving it BEANAGE’”.

Lovely little message from Charlie this evening. This was my third wedding of 2026 the weather was dreadful. Like double bad. I was really pleased with how these came out to be honest! It was far more hectic than the piccies make it look to be honest. Taken at the lovely Hi James

Thank you so much - we can’t stop looking at the photos, we LOVE them!! Every single one is amazing - we can’t believe how perfectly you’ve captured everyone’s personalities and the vibe of the day.

Thank you for being such a fun presence and making the day even more special, and for making the process of getting magazine-worthy photos feel like an easy 15 mins of alone time! (And for braving the deer field with us - it was so worth it!)

We’re so so grateful and v happy to post a glowing review wherever you’d like - just let us know!

Thanks a million,
Alex & Charlie

I woke up today and realised I haven’t updated my website since 2021. Thought, “No problem, I’ll crack on,” but then got distracted looking into the health properties of iodine (turns out, very impressive)… and now it’s late afternoon, and the website hasn’t moved an inch.

On the plus side, the asked for the pictures I took at Fin and Phoebe’s wedding there back in the autumn. Too many to pick from at first, but then I thought: why not post four of Phoebe sitting on a table and one of her sitting on a chair? Can’t go wrong.

So here you go: four pictures of Phoebe sitting on a table and one of her sitting on a chair.

For my next great story, check back tomorrow!

I never usually post Christmas piccies, by the time they’re edited it always feels a bit overcooked.

That said… I’ve shot some proper bangers recently, so I’m sneaking these into the January feed. Look closely and you might spot a tree🎄soz!

So here are a couple from Flo & Ben’s Christmas wedding at

One of my long-term missions: shoot a wedding in every cathedral in the UK - about a third ticked off so far!!

Which cathedral should I aim for next?
