SS Cretehawser at the River Wear Sunderland, Weighing 262 tonnes and measuring 125 Feet Long, Was a tug boat from 1919 till 1935.

The SS Cretehawser was powered by a screw driven, three cylinder engine from Central Marine Engine Works in West Hartlepool that boasted 120 horsepower.

In May 1943 it was hit by a German bomber at Hendon and sunk but it was subsequently raised and towed up river to the Pallion/Hylton area.

It was actually a working tug weighing 262 tons and was launched on March 15 1919.

Constructed at Wear Concrete Building Company Ltd near Southwick, Sunderland. Cretehawser towed concrete barges from Spain to Britain for sixteen years until 1935 and was later towed to it's current spot on the Wear. It was used as an emergency breakwater, narrowly escaping being scrapped.
