Another one of this years kits taken to the vet to be euthanised.
One picture from May, the other from July.
This is likely caused as a result of Green Sefton allowing grey squirrel to breed openly in Parks and open areas they are responsible for.
The grey squirrel carries the squirrelpox virus, with no ill affect on themselves, whilst distributing the virus to red squrrels that have no resistance to the virus, and die a painful cruel death within a few weeks once infected.
After 12 months of writing to Green Sefton, and finally via my MP, I had a face to face meeting with the manager at Green Sefton responsible, for the areas grey squirrels openly breed.
Their response was, they didn't think it was an issue, and that red squirrels have developed immunity to squirrelpox.
When I asked what they based that statement on, manager said it was based on their own observations they saw during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the way humans developed herd immunity.
This of course is total nonsense and an incredibly dangerous and ignorant opinion based on zero evidence.
The final cop out was that they said they will be guided by Lancashire Wildlife Trust, not me in these matters.
Well what are you going to say now Green Sefton manager Sefton Council I know you are likely reading this!

2 months between these pictures, and although only 1 in 6 red squirrels statistically live to see 12 months of age, that number drops to zero when squirrelpox infections occur. It is a devastating disease and can take out whole colonies of red squirrel from just a single transmission of infection from a grey squirrel.
This youngster lost its young life yesterday as the decision was made to euthanise by the vet to save it from further suffering.
Why is management at Green Sefton making decisions about not controlling the out of control grey squirrel breeding in parks and open spaces in Southport? which leads to grey squirrel spread into residential areas along the Sefton coastline, including Formby.
Management at Green Sefton preferring to allow grey squirrel to spread into residential areas and let residents deal with the fall out of grey squirrel removal, and squirrelpox infections in red squirrels.
Management at Green Sefton also making decisions based on deluded views that squirrelpox isn't an issue and that red squirrels have developed resistance to the disease, based on managements observations and drawing parallels from the COVID-19 pandemic in humans.
Please remove all types of feeders from your garden if you live along the Sefton Coast. These are main hotspots for disease transmission between the grey squirrel and red squirrel. It takes only a second for a grey squirrel to visit and leave the virus on the feeder, which can then stay viable for days.
And for the sake of red squirrels along the Sefton coast, please Green Sefton do something about the open breeding and spread of grey squirrel in the open spaces you are responsible for.

The young female red squirrel, was euthanised this afternoon to save it from further suffering.
Another innocent beautiful animal let down by Sefton Council and the Government.

The red squirrel was contained late this morning Tuesday) and taken straight to Village Vets Formby for assessment. It is in the best care.
The saddest of news, as a returning kitt from the last crop turned up this morning with classic squirrel pox symptoms.
For those in Formby please remove bird feeders, and any food source from your gardens, as these are high risk areas for pox transmission between squirrels.
Yet again, wildlife let down by Sefton, Borough Council, UK Government and several national charities.
This cruel disease and prolonged painful death these animals have suffered for years, and still suffer to this day has to stop.

Happy to see this years kitts, but also sad to see the sow red squirrels urging their kitts to move on and start their own independent lives on their own patch.
Only 1 in 6 red squirrels live to be 12 months of age (if they can't avoid squirrelpox then zero will survive) and healthy breeding females are majorly important to the survival of the species.
The sow will mate for a second time if she is healthy enough to cope with another litter this year, and moving her young on, although sad to see, is all part of the process.
We will hopefully have the kitts visit again in the future at some point if they visit their mothers patch.

Exciting news!!
We knew there were kits in the dreys, as the females were showing signs they were feeding them, but they seemed to be late making an appearance.
Today that all changed, and we have seen a few kits exploring with their mother and playing with each other in the trees.
Always exciting to see them for the first time and hoping they can be successful and make it to adulthood.

One of our garden red squirrels features on the cover and also a DPS, of Country Life Magazine Magazine.
The article writes about the recovery and fightback of the red squirrel and shares valuable information.
