Update ~ 12:20

X-flare in progress...

Finally 💥

After what seems like an age of very significant activity, sunspot 4455 has spurted into life producing some large M-class solar flares.

About 02:30 this morning, it produced an M9 flare - almost an X flare along with an M7.7 flare at around 08:00.

The earlier and slightly stronger flare has produced a faint CME that should hit earth on June 5th.

The problem at this time of year is it's never properly dark 🌚 and we'll also have a 75% moon 🌙 which won't help.

There will only be a small window of opportunity.

But anyway, fingers crossed and let's hope for a hit during night time hours!

Stay tuned for updates 🙏🏻

It could be a Good Friday aurora wise!

Solar wind is high, and it's possible we've been clipped by a filament erupting from the sun, or less likely in my opinion a delayed CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) from 1st April.

Regardless, aurora is likely to be visible on camera tonight from around 21:00 onwards.
Unfortunately an almost full moon 🌝 rises just before 22:00, so there's about a 1 hour window for the best chance of some decent photography 📷.

Clearer skies are forecast tonight, more so towards the East of our region.

Good luck if you're out.

All go for tonight. Aurora already visible on camera.

This display is unlikely to be as strong as last night's.

The East Riding looks to have the least cloud cover with Beverley/Market Weighton area being the clearest.

You'll need to be away from artificial light and point your camera/phone low towards the northern horizon.

Good luck!

⚠️ Same again for tonight⁉️

Last night's aurora was historic. The stats were better than what many of you saw in 2024.

Unfortunately, most of our area was covered in cloud, so we saw very little if anything.

However, the aurora is still going strong, and if it can hold until later, it will be visible in camera at least as soon as it's dark enough (after about 17:50). It almost certainly won't be as strong or as vivid as last night, but it should be a decent enough display.

Clearer skies for our area tonight, especially for those of you in the East Riding, Hull and along the coast.

Good luck, and I'll update any significant changes.

Just made the looong trip up to a friend's place in Scotland. The aurora is going crazy.

IF and it's a big IF in Yorkshire, and you have clear skies, get outside. Aurora visible in colour by eye up here.

Within the next 20 - 30 mins the stats will be incredible, you won't need to worry as much about light pollution.

A strong aurora is happening right now.

Very likely to be visible on camera if you're away from artificial light AND have clear skies 😕

Clearer skies are forecast in our region from midnight, so fingers crossed it holds until then.

Boom 💣and right in the strike zone!

A very strong M-class flare, almost an X.

We wait to see if there's a CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) produced.

🤞🏻

Another morning, another X-flare 💥

From the same sunspot that produced the other 3 X-flares earlier in the week.

This sunspot, AR4274 is now rotating away from Earth, so any CME produced would give us a glancing blow rather than a direct hit.
