Greenan Castle, Ayrshire, Scotland

Greenan Castle is a 16th century tower house on the West Coast of Scotland, around 2 miles south of Ayr. It was built on the site of a 12th century motte-and-bailey fort, which itself was built on the site of an existing promontory fort.

Abandoned as a residential structure in the late 18th century, the castle now stands in ruins, watching over the Firth of Clyde and the Isle of Arran.

"The view down Loch Nan Uamh towards Gulvain. It was just a quick stop off on this trip, but is now firmly on my list of places to go back to and spend a good chunk of time."

It was the world's first major steel structure, and is still used by 200 trains a day and carries 3 million passengers each year.
