What's a handstand got to do with business?

A year ago I couldn’t hold a frog stand for more than a second. This week I managed a handstand for a few seconds without support.

I’m not training for anything. I’m not documenting some big transformation. I’ve just been doing it for fun, a minute or two most days, building strength slowly and accepting that I’m going to wobble (a lot).

It made me realise how much business feels like this.

There’s rarely a big, dramatic shift. It’s usually small, repeated effort that eventually adds up to something you once thought you couldn’t do.

You don’t always notice how far you’ve come until you try something that used to feel impossible and realise… oh. I can do that now.

I’m still very much a beginner, but I quite like that. Growth doesn’t have to be loud to be real.

Have a think, in business or on life, what have you been chipping away at that you can do now but couldn't before? And once you have thought about it, celebrate it!

I’ve been tagged in a few posts recently from people looking for a commercial pet photographer so I thought I’d introduce myself properly 👋

Hi, I’m Kerry, founder of Fur & Fables.

I’ve been working within the pet industry for over a decade, photographing close to a thousand dogs along the way, and helping pet brands create imagery that feels both strategic and genuinely connected.

I work with solo petpreneurs, growing ethical brands, and established companies who want more than just “nice photos.” They want imagery that reflects their values, elevates their positioning, and works across websites, campaigns, trade shows and social media.

Before photography became my full-time world, I worked in project management, supported CEOs, handled international logistics and even served as a Special Constable. Which basically means I’m very comfortable managing moving parts, tight timelines, and the occasional chaos.

On a shoot day, that translates to:

• Calm, clear direction

• Detailed pre-production planning

• Reading animal body language instinctively

• Adapting when things don’t go to plan

• Making sure everyone (human and dog) feels relaxed

Experience in the pet industry matters. Animals aren’t props. They need short bursts, breaks, and an environment where they feel safe. That understanding is what creates imagery that feels effortless rather than staged.

Some clients send their products to me.

Some bring me to them.

Some work with me on long-term retainers across the year.

I’m based in the Lake District but work across the UK and Europe (recently completing my first European commercial campaign - two whippets and a ferry involved), and also have had a European & a US based brand send their products to me.

If you’re a pet brand looking for high end imagery with both creative and logistical expertise behind it, I’d love to hear from you.

And if you’ve tagged me recently - thank you, I really do appreciate it!

Kerry

In just 5 weeks, we will be changing the clocks - can you believe it?

It's been a busy start to the year with a few shoots already done (on more than one occasion I couldn't feel my fingers!) and looking forward, there's no sign of slowing down, and I can't wait!

So what's coming up in the next month or so?

👉🏻Client shoots for FOUR new clients who I am super excited to be working with including two very different dog collars, an amazing dog trainer, and a scent work brand.
👉🏻Returning client shoots
👉🏻Crufts - I'll be there Thursday & Friday if anyone is around
👉🏻Norfolk for some more work with including managing a potential podcast!
👉🏻Creating a flat lay portfolio (simple backgrounds for products)
👉🏻Launching my 'Set Menu' retainer package

So a fair bit to manage but I still have spots in April & May if you wanted to chat to me about booking in a shoot for your brand!

Want to know more? Pop over to www.furandfables.com or drop me an email to [email protected] - I'd love to hear from you!

Huge thank you to The Times Radio for inviting me on to talk about; should dogs wear clothes.

A fun debate with Graeme Hall where we agreed on some things too.

Owning whippets for 16 years, and photographing for brands who create functional clothing for dogs, obviously I'm pro clothing and that hasn't changed - but it was a fab opportunity to chat about it, and maybe change a few minds.

Was a smidge nervous but think it went okay!

A lovely debate with Graeme Hall and Ed Vaizley on The Times Radio about whether dogs should wear coats or not.

Just about to debate all things dogs and clothing on The Times Radio with Graeme Hall - wish me luck

Throwback to 2017 and a photoshoot for a magazine cover. No AI, no layered image just the right dogs and lots of patience 😂I think the only thing I edited was the spaghetti so it was a bit higher.

If you want authentic, storytelling imagery which will get people talking, and keep them talking, drop me an email : [email protected]

Remote shoots make things easy for you!

You don't have to travel, you don't have to worry about travel costs of me coming to you, we talk about the shoot before and during to make sure the brief is clear then you leave the rest to me!

You send your product, I'll source dog models, create a proposed shot list and find the location and organise everything. If the weather's rubbish, it doesn't matter too much as I'll have your products and can rearrange.

Here's some of my recent work (and some very lovely words) for - very much looking forward to working together more!

Calling all you big and beautiful breeds!

I'm looking for fit and active big breed dogs for a shoot.

Preference will be given to smooth or shorter haired dogs due to the product being collars, but I'll be able to work with longer haired dogs too.

Ridgeback, doberman etc kind of size would be fantastic. I already have a short haired pointer lined up so have that breed covered. No cropped ears or docked tails.

Dogs need to be:

🐾Well socialised & good with other dogs
🐾Be able to do a sit or stand and wait at a distance
🐾Have good recall
🐾No resource guarding
🐾Enjoy being adored and love treats

Feel free to drop a tag in the comments or whatsapp me on 07810541685 - looking forward to hearing from you! Kerry x

I am very lucky that in my 15+ years of business in various guises, I have had very few negative comments or online bullies.

I've always tried to be pretty open and am constantly amazed at the wonderful, supportive people who have followed my journey.

Putting any kind of content out there on social media can be pretty scary, the occasional person will come out of the woodwork and make a sweeping statement or voice an opinion in an aggressive way.

Here's the thing - I try to be open to different opinions. If someone doesn't agree with me, that's okay, we can either agree to disagree but I don't want my opinion to be part of my identity because opinions change (although values general don't), so even though it might irk me, I can accept when I'm wrong ... IF the person comes at it in a respectful way.

I have been popping some videos on my youtube account as I'd like to try and grow it this year, and this morning (in the heights of a perimenopause mood swing no less), I noticed that someone had left a comment, and not a nice one. They started with 'You're extremely naive if...' and ended with 'don't be selfish....'

No discussion, no 'did you know that' or 'are you aware that' - just straight in making personal judgements and being, quite frankly, an arse. So I've deleted the comment. I could have left it up and responded with a calm statement, but based on their initial comment, they wouldn't have cared, they had a view, they were right, I was naïve and selfish, nothing I could have said would have changed their mind. And I'd much prefer to spend my time and energy with people who are respectful and kind. Like the people on here.

But hey, it's made good content, and unfortunately I'm sure it's something a lot of people can relate too.

Thanks for being lovely,

K x
