Introducing SILENT EXCHANGE

I’m delighted to introduce SILENT EXCHANGE, a new series of books drawn from my photographic archive.

The first volume, STILLNESS, brings together photographs made over many years and in many different places - some familiar, others rarely seen, and some that have never appeared in a book before.

Looking through the archive has been a rather wonderful experience, revealing connections between photographs that I wasn’t necessarily aware of when I made them.

STILLNESS is available to pre-order now for £15 until 3 September (usual price £20).

There is also a Special Edition of just 40 copies at £50, which includes a signed copy of the book and an exclusive signed and numbered print of Chesil Beach, Dorset, UK.

A solitary object within a wide expanse can have an extraordinary presence.

I’ve often found that when everything unnecessary is removed, a photograph begins to breathe. A single boat, a lone tree or a swan surrounded by space can become an expression of stillness.

Yorkshire.
One of the most rewarding aspects of landscape photography is to study all the contributing component elements of what lies in front of you, and then to exclude all those parts that effectively are not appropriate and that appear to be mismatched.
I often see it as 'landscape friendships', and that when each is saying to the other 'nice to meet you' and they are embracing, that is when the photograph can be made.

SAFI GATE, MOROCCO

Any arc may contribute to a form of architectural grace and to my mind and eye, contour, shadow and line that can repeat and interweave with another become a gentle story of rhythm and contrast. The slither of shadow along the bottom is pivotal and was all there was available.

The Dead Sea, flanked by exceptionally beautiful salt encrustations, interlocking so exquisitely with the evening sunlight. Complete group silence prevailed as we remained in a state of wonder, during our Light & Land Photographic Tours and Workshops tour in Jordan.

The creators of this simple fence might never have known that some years later when graced by ravishing light, as was the case on this day, I would be so delighted to enjoy this fleeting moment of such an elegant and golden diagonal.
