SAFI GATE, MOROCCO

Any arc may contribute to a form of architectural grace and to my mind and eye, contour, shadow and line that can repeat and interweave with another become a gentle story of rhythm and contrast. The slither of shadow along the bottom is pivotal and was all there was available.

The Dead Sea, flanked by exceptionally beautiful salt encrustations, interlocking so exquisitely with the evening sunlight. Complete group silence prevailed as we remained in a state of wonder, during our Light & Land Photographic Tours and Workshops tour in Jordan.

The creators of this simple fence might never have known that some years later when graced by ravishing light, as was the case on this day, I would be so delighted to enjoy this fleeting moment of such an elegant and golden diagonal.

South of Warminster, Wiltshire.

I have known these wonderfully weaving shapes for about forty years. Their performances have never been repeated. Often, I depart without having made a photograph, yet I have always been elevated by being in their company. Every time, I silently thank the farmers, and of course that pivotal catalyst - the light.

I often think that when a landscape lighting scenario provides all that one wishes for, the immense emotional response is beyond words or description. The only return can be the photograph.

My work on a commissioned book about Libya came to an end with my return to the UK on 14 February 2011 — just one day before unrest broke out in Benghazi. My guides had told me it had become essential for me to leave urgently, and I remain deeply grateful for their concern.

Sadly, the book was never published. (You can see many of the photographs in my e-book "The Last Flight Out - Unseen Libya on the Eve of the First Civil War", which on can find on my website.)

One of my final, and most captivating, photography locations in Libya was Ghadamès — one of the oldest pre-Saharan cities, often described as the “Pearl of the Desert”. Had I not been told I must return on 14th February, I would have gladly stayed in Ghadamès for at least another week. It was, and remains in my memory, a truly mesmerising city.

It has been long overdue, but my website has finally been given a little refresh. I will still be adding new content over the coming weeks, so if you care to have a look now, do pop back from time to time.
But today I am so pleased to introduce my new pdf monograph THE LAST FLIGHT OUT - UNSEEN LIBYA, ON THE EVE OF THE FIRST CIVIL WAR. You can find it on the DOWNLOADS page of my website. I'll put the link in the comments.

It is wonderful to read about what patients, staff and visitors in a hospital feel when looking at a landscape photograph. Willoughby Hedge, is on display at St George’s Hospital in Lindon.

'Willoughby Hedge, England' by Charlie Waite is our Artwork of the Month for April 2025! It was chosen by members of staff from the Radiology department and visitors to the X-Ray waiting room in St James Wing as their favourite from the artworks on display in that space.

One person said that they found the artwork ‘very relaxing in what can be a very stressful waiting area’. Another said that they liked the ‘brightness’ brought to the artwork by ‘pastel colours’ in the grass, and that it is source of a ‘escapism and peace’ which gave them a ‘glimpse of the outside world when at the hospital’.

Each month, we highlight an artwork as part of our Artwork of the Month series. This series is a part of The National Lottery Heritage Fund project, 'Our Hospital: conserving, curating and responding to St George's Art and Heritage Collection'.
