I Know A Place

I Know A Place We're Gail and David of Rooftop Mosaic, an urban photography and film partnership based in Glasgow, Scotland.

We love juxtaposing the romantic and the industrial; the soulful and the concrete. We’re Gail and David of Rooftop Mosaic, and we’re an urban photography and film partnership. We live in Glasgow, in a top floor flat with a great view of the Clyde, and we love to travel to cities all over the world and shoot images, still or moving; film or digital. We'll shoot fashion, portraits, brands, and a sma

ll number of city weddings each year. Our photography style is alternative, with a fine art influence. We love to document people, places, and things as they actually are, so in that sense we’re into documentary photography in a big way. We also love typography and beautiful design, and epic movies.

Yesterday we said goodbye to another one of the good guys, taken far, far too soon.

I met Al over a decade ago at an evening photography class in Glasgow. We both agreed at the time that the class wasn’t necessarily the most stimulating, but that it got us out shooting more, and we bonded over our new shared passion. Al was an invaluable support in those early years of my photography career. We even had the pleasure of working together a few times, with him helping me shoot my first ever paid wedding.

Over the years I shared many coffees, meals and chats with Alastair, as well as his lovely wife Berenice, and their two talented boys, with my husband David joining in along the way. The highlight of course was having the pleasure and honour of shooting Al and B’s wedding. After 25 years together they tied the knot in their family home in the West End. It was the most amazing day. The love and goodwill in the room was immense. We will never forget it and we have always felt very grateful that we were able to witness and document Al and B’s inimitable love for each other, as well as their boys and the life they’d built. 💕

Al was without a doubt the kindest person on the planet. He always had so much time to give to everyone else. It was standing room only yesterday as everyone came to say their farewells. A testament to the man he was and the lives he’d touched.

Thanks for everything pal, you’ll be very missed. 📸

We just spent two days at Photography Farm's annual FarmShop event, this time at the Biscuit Factory in Edinburgh. As usual, we’re buzzing with inspiration after the event, which once again assembled an incredible line up of international mentors.

Eric Ronald's talk was emotional and talked about seizing the day. Jennifer Moher Photography talked about being bold and asking for the things we want out of life. Gabe McClintock Photography shared his process from shooting to curating. The Twins talked about how to differentiate and stand out; Neil Thomas Douglas Photography gave a masterclass in composition and light; Tu Nguyen Wedding laid bare his cinematic approach to storytelling. All this and so much more. Each mentor ran inspired and practical shoot sessions (we saw Jennifer work up close for two full hours and it was amazing). And Farm headmistress Lisa Devlin Photography inspired us to avoid complacency and shoot on different kit - so we left the Canon gear in our bag and shot all day on our compact Fuji kit.

We don’t shoot for ourselves enough - so grabbing a few seconds with a few of the mentors to work on some black and white portraiture was an indulgence that we couldn’t pass up. Thanks so much to them for humouring us, and to Lisa for hosting another killer event.

Linn + Ross' beautiful Norwegian-Swiss-Orcadian wedding on Glasgow's Tall Ship was a blustery day full of whisky, stormy winds, foreign folk trying to ceilidh, a singing bride, heavy-duty confetti, and two utterly smitten human beings.

Last autumn, we spent a lovely day chasing Emma (Betty Bluebell) and Robert and their beloved dog Ted around Glasgow city centre after their wedding at Sloans Bar & Restaurant. And today, you can read all about it on Love My Dress

Our wedding, which was basically us being chased around the streets of Glasgow by the amazing Caro Weiss Photography and then ultimately going to the pub (Drygate specifically), has just been featured on Love My Dress!

Since we were planning the wedding in such a short time, I pinned a small collection of ideas onto a Pinterest board it and then I stopped looking for ideas, instead spending that time researching things I actually needed to buy for the wedding. Being a designer I'd always worried that I'd really st...
