Why a pre-wedding shoot is a great idea!

1 It gets you comfortable in front of the camera. Most couples haven’t been professionally photographed together before—this takes the nerves out of the wedding day so things feel natural, not staged.

2 You’re already confident in front of the camera, so portraits on the wedding day are quicker and smoother. That means less disappearing for photos and more time actually being present—talking, laughing, and celebrating with your guests.

3 It lets you do something completely separate from the wedding day. A city, mountains, or place that means something to you adds variety and personality, and gives you a different look without squeezing it into the wedding timeline.

A beautiful, calm, autumnal wedding in the petite village of Dunblane. And quite possibly the best encounter I’ve ever had with a couple.

I first met Sarah-Jo and Joe entirely by accident—on a fairy hill, of all places. It was an autumn Sunday afternoon, a little rainy, and for once I’d decided to bring my camera along. As we wandered, there was that unmistakable feeling that something was about to happen. So we kept our distance, giving them plenty of space, very deliberately not lurking in the bushes, and quietly made our way toward the plateau.

Once we realised she’d said yes, we popped out to congratulate them. And since I already had my camera in my hands, I offered to take a few photos right there on that fairy hill—nothing planned, nothing posed, just the moment as it was.

One year later, I found myself photographing them again, this time as they tied the knot in a beautifully intimate ceremony. From an unexpected engagement to a wedding day rooted in the same quiet, heartfelt energy—it was a full-circle moment of a story to tell in the future.

As an artist it is hard to put into words what your art is about so the right people can find you on the vast internet. As I looked back on this image, although it was not inspired by anything particular, the paintings I grew up must have been playing a reel somewhere at the back of my head. In particular Renoir, the Romantics of the 18th century and Fragonard's painting 'The Swing'.
I think looking into Rococo art, and it's description fits quite neatly into my photographic repertoire.

'Rococo art is known for its pastel colors, elaborate detail, and theatricality, often featuring themes of nature, love, and lighthearted entertainment'

If there was a parallel world, I'd exist in this one.
This was an impromptu shoot not for its own sake but location scouting for another project. I didn't know then that it would turn out to be one of my favourite shoots I've done, and Glencoe in full sunshine!? It's something else.🏔🌄
