One of my favourite projects of late involved creating the artwork and album layout for From The Ground, an incredible and thoughtful collaboration between Laura-Beth Salter and Ali Hutton with additional magic from Duncan Lyall, Patsy Reid, Paul Jennings, Kim Carnie and more.
Initial discussions highlighted several key themes, including nature and its impact on mental health, displacement and movement, uprooting and refuge, climate change and the environment. If you've been following my work for a while, you'll likely know that I was both IN and geeking out almost immediately 🌱🖌🌳
I began researching tree lore, with a particular focus on Yew (Taxus baccata, associated with death, rebirth, change and regeneration) and stories of Yggdrasil, the World Tree in Norse mythology (notably said to represent the interconnectedness of all things and the cyclical nature of time, amongst other interpretations).
The cover art was created using layers and layers of texture. These were largely hand-drawn and painted using pencil, inks and acrylic, and some were tinkered-with photos from my personal work archive. Swipe through to see a few of the textures and design assets created for this project! ➡️
The fantastic moody portrait on image 6 in this carousel, onto which the main tree illustration has been overlaid, was taken by Howler Monkey Media .
"From The Ground" is available to purchase and listen to on Bandcamp now!
Fancy working together? I'm currently accepting new album artwork commissions and would love to hear what you've been creating ❤️
