So pleased that Conrad Milne dystopianartist's North Shields 800 project now has a permanent home at the Linskill Centre. I'm proud of my involvement, having been commissioned last year to make documentary photography that was incorporated into this engaging and intricate collage work. Book now to reserve your place at this very special event (link in comments).

I'm very much interested in collaborating with other creatives. Please get in touch if you have a project we might work together on.

TAYLOR WESSING PHOTO PORTRAIT PRIZE 2026 UPDATE

Dear Hazel Plater,

Thank you very much for entering this year's competition. The judges have now made their final decision, and I am afraid that on this occasion your entry was not selected for the exhibition. This year, we had just under 4,000 entries from over 1,300 photographers from 55 countries, and only 400 of those made it through to the second round of judging, so the competition was very strong.

We wish you the very best with your continued practice and hope that you will consider applying to the competition again in the future.

---

Thank you National Portrait Gallery Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize. I'm very happy to have made it into Round 2 (x 2 photographs!) this year - my first time entering, and maybe I'll have something to enter next year.

It was so good to be back at Appleby Horse Fair yesterday. Such a great vibe! Here are a few of my favourite photographs from a very special day. Look out for the mermaid - rarely spotted by the River Eden. 🧜‍♀️ 😍

Repping my birth town with my I Love North Shields tote on the train down to London, baby!! I have my fine art prints of Josephine and Milly in a ginormous Newcastle-representing Fenwick bag too. They are off for the 2nd round of judging in the National Portrait Gallery Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize 2026.

Yes, I'm milking getting this far, but I also think it's worth shouting about because both my photographs were created in Meadow Well, an area of North Shields, North Tyneside, UK that has had - and still has - its problems, but is also moving forward with a great and positive energy. Thank you to Made in Meadow Well and Remembering the Past for commissioning these works, facilitating this visual storytelling.

Yesterday Sasha and I presented our project “Vive le Moment” to the InSide Documentary group! It went well and we got some very interesting feedback and questions from the audience of photographers and artists.

This photography project, made in March/April 2025, examines life in a care home for older people, many of whom have dementia or other difficulties that mean they can no longer live independently. The work was made in Nantes, France - a joint project between Sasha Mallo Tardiveau and Hazel Plater.

The photographers recorded the day-to-day life in the care home, such as group movement activities and afternoons on the patio, and found they were especially fortunate to arrive on the week that the therapeutic clowns were visiting.

The work was presented in a vernissage at the end of the week, where the residents responded to seeing their very recent lives reflected back at them through the power of photography. The work is now displayed as prints in communal spaces around the care home.

I'm thrilled to be through to the 2nd Round of the Taylor Wessing Photo Portrait Prize 2026 with my two photographs here.

Left - Milly at The Meadows
Right - Josephine in Meadow Well

I'm now producing high quality prints of them both, ready for the next round of judging, where they could be selected for a touring exhibition that starts at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Even if not, I'm so pleased they got so far!

Thanks to Milly and Josephine and commissioning organisations The Meadows Community Centre and Remembering The Past. North Shields FTW!

You can currently see (and purchase framed) both photographs at The Northumberland Open Exhibition 2026, Woodhorn Museum, Northumberland, although closing this Sunday 10th May.

Contact me via my website hazelplater.myportfolio.com for other prints or if you too would like to commission me!
