“Planned Space, Lived Place” will now stay open until Saturday 12 September, giving you a few more days to catch the exhibition at the Farrell Centre, Newcastle.

Bringing together work from the AmberSide Collection and members of our InSide photographic community, the exhibition looks at New Towns and planned communities across Peterlee, Washington and Killingworth, and at the gap between how places are planned and how they are actually lived.

There's beauty even on the rainy days. Scenes from our Pride in Place wellbeing photowalk in Stanley, Co. Durham this week, where we're gathering The Beauty in the Everyday. 📣 Side Shout Out: Sasha Mallo Tardiveau

It’s great to see Sasha Mallo Tardiveau’s "Terminus" getting some well-deserved attention this week, with the project profiled by both BBC News and the Newcastle Chronicle.

Photographed between 2024 and 2026, "Terminus" follows everyday life on the Tyne and Wear Metro as its original fleet was phased out, from commuters and football fans to nights out, families and chance encounters across the network.

Sasha is part of our InSide community and a distinctive emerging talent in the region’s photographic community, so we’re really pleased to see her work reaching a wider audience.

We’ve made some great progress on our zine project, “The Beauty in the Everyday” - check out some recent work by participants on our wellbeing photowalks. Grateful for the commissioned work I've had in July and August.

Photographs from Blackbird of Segga, a community focussed project in Sacriston, County Durham. I photographed the artists from Butterfly in the Head and their participants as they developed thoughts about Sacriston's past, present and future through walking in nature, relaxed improv, poetry and collaborative crafts. The project, funded by No More Nowt, worked with both elders and young people, bringing them together for a sharing event at the close.

Photographs:

1. Thought provoking nature walking then sitting on a flat bed truck reminiscing about the annual parade floats that used go through Sacriston.
2. Michael and the cob nuts he used to pick as a youth.
3. A child led activity wrapped up the young people's session - making and decorating origami butterflies.
4. August and Rosa introduce their poem before performing it with audience participation - "warble" "warble warble".
5. The Segga (Sacriston) storytelling tapestry, inspired by Chilean arpilleras, completed during the project, framed in the Woodshed Workshop and displayed at the closing event.

Thank you, August and Rosa for having me along to document such wonderfully creative, collaborative work.

Wow! The People's Garden has grown so much (just like any good garden should) since Sasha Mallo Tardiveau and I's work appeared on the initial row. Visit 'Is this a Garden?' to see, at Open Eye Gallery, Liverpool, closing on 31st August.

We're absolutely blown away by the response we've had to our open call! You've shared your gardens and flowers, your quiet joys, your moments of celebration and contemplation – and it's a privilege to exhibit them.

It's your last chance to see our current exhibitions – on until 31 August. We are open 10am – 5pm Tuesday – Sunday (with special hours 11am – 4pm on Monday 31 August).

On Tuesday, Sasha Mallo Tardiveau and I ran our first wellbeing photowalk, funded by Pride in Place, in Stanley, Co. Durham. You can see some photographs by our first participants here.
