So I've sat on this for quite a while, because I'm never entirely happy with it (web design is not my thang), but sometimes you just have to release a wee beastie into the wild, because it ain't gonna be happy kept in a box. That wee beastie is a shiny new website, where I've cherry picked some of my favourite musical moments through the years from various events across the UK.

Well, what a couple of years that was. Sadly ended with a family bereavement and largely why I haven't been gracing your timeline. HOWEVER, it's time to blow the dust off the camera. This week sees the start of Hidden Door 2022 | 9-18 June | Old Royal High, Edinburgh. For the uninitiated, HD takes over largely neglected or abandoned spaces in and around Edinburgh to host a multi-arts festival, breathing fresh life into these amazing locations and often leaving a legacy of venues remaining in use (with seemingly less pigeon p**p).

Last year, HD took over Granton Gasworks, just northwest of the city, with the listed gas holder as a backdrop. Here's a very small selection of highlights.

This year, HD takes over one of the most beautiful and forgotten sites in the city; The Old Royal High School. From it's prominent position on the side of Calton Hill, it commands a view over the city with it's extinct volcano, Arthur's Seat as the backdrop. Exploring the site recently during the build, things are looking to be equally SEISMIC!

Class begins in less than 3 days. Don't be late!

2 days left to help Hidden Door support recent art graduates denied the opportunity to showcase their work over the past year. The space is HUGE and will be an amazing exhibition for these grads. If you can't make the event but would still like to support them, there are also non-ticket options. Campaign ends on Thursday 2nd September. Beauty will be in the shadow of the gas holder!

Help Hidden Door transform an indoor venue near the gasworks site into an exhibition space for grads who missed out due to COVID-19

Looking forward to getting involved in Hidden Door festival 2021 at the iconic Granton Gasworks, Edinburgh. Awesome event stuff aside, the really cool part is their plan to put on an exhibition showcasing recent art graduates who have been denied the opportunity due to.....you know. However, to secure all of this requires people pocket power. Let's help these new artists have a great start!

WHAT A RIDE
It's fair to say that the past year has been...unique...and if I'm honest, I've often lacked the motivation to pick up my camera. I've reflected on this and why I haven't kept the shutter button busy with some clever home made dioramas, possibly involving vegetables etc. The truth is, I don't like substitutes (but do like vegetables) and while I enjoy various forms of photography, my favourite has to be events (and parsnips). Arguably, it's a poor excuse, because it's essential to train, even when you're not on the track.
REASONS TO BE THANKFUL
It is said that writers should write about what they know, love and others would like to experience. This applies to any creative act and while I'm no writer or performer, I'm passionate about live arts, both as a guest and as a documenter. Events are not just a means for artists to share and thrive, but a place in which humans meet, connect with the art and with each other through a shared, visceral experience. It is an experience that is greater than the sum of the parts and persists long after the curtain falls. You just don't get that vibe from an online gig with a chat window and emojis. It's almost heart-breaking seeing an artist perform to an empty venue, absent of the feedback on which they thrive. That said, I am absolutely thankful for the response by creatives to ...well... get creative, providing much needed catharsis for us and I imagine, themselves. For the music, dance, art, spoken word and everything in between, Thank You.
LOOK TO THE HORIZON, NOT THE SKY
With the planned return to relative normality, I feel a sense of cautious optimism and that, for now, is enough. Seeing events companies recruiting again and some events in the planning for later in the year, provides much hope. Here's to a safe return to spaces and faces that inspire awe.
Until then, here's a reminder of what live events looked like back in 2019. I think may have even been my most recent event! Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival

Samhuinn/Samhain. A moment between moments. A transition between Autumn and Winter. The global situation may have prevented the usual gathering of 300 performers in sharing this time with 1000s of locals and visitors alike, but we can still reflect on the year and prepare ourselves for the colder, darker days ahead. It's a time to hunker down, get that insanely thick jumper out, hot choc on standby, stoke the fire (or thermostat) and hold folk just that bit closer. The coming months are also a time for learning and planning our path ahead, ready for when the buds burst forth in the Spring. It's easy for the current situation to consume our thoughts, but it's important to remember that we are part of a larger, unchanging cycle, of which now is a very small part. There is beauty in this, for it should drive us to make the most of every hour of light. The days are short and the light is dim, but the fires in the darkness will always draw us together.

I thought I'd mark today, by drawing from my archives with some favourite moments from past Edinburgh Samhuinn Fire Festivals, by the Beltane Fire Society.

Happy Samhuinn!

It's that time where the veil between worlds grows thinner. You may recall that a couple of years ago, I filmed the Samhuinn Fire Festival by the Beltane Fire Society. Slight departure from my usual stills work with them, but fun nonetheless. Head over to the US Travel Channel and check out the premiere of "This is Halloween" tonight at 9pm ET/PT, created by the talented folk over at 1895 Films. You may spot an extract of the fiery goings taken from my video.

Be sure to check out some of their other show and documentaries.

Monday is Shock Docs night on Travel Channel! First, watch an encore presentation of "Devil's Road: The True Story of Ed and Lorraine Warren" at 7 pm ET/PT. Then see the 2-hour premiere of our new Shock Docs episode "This is Halloween" at 9 pm ET/PT. It's scary Halloween fun Monday, October 26, on Travel Channel.
