WHAT A RIDE
It's fair to say that the past year has been...unique...and if I'm honest, I've often lacked the motivation to pick up my camera. I've reflected on this and why I haven't kept the shutter button busy with some clever home made dioramas, possibly involving vegetables etc. The truth is, I don't like substitutes (but do like vegetables) and while I enjoy various forms of photography, my favourite has to be events (and parsnips). Arguably, it's a poor excuse, because it's essential to train, even when you're not on the track.
REASONS TO BE THANKFUL
It is said that writers should write about what they know, love and others would like to experience. This applies to any creative act and while I'm no writer or performer, I'm passionate about live arts, both as a guest and as a documenter. Events are not just a means for artists to share and thrive, but a place in which humans meet, connect with the art and with each other through a shared, visceral experience. It is an experience that is greater than the sum of the parts and persists long after the curtain falls. You just don't get that vibe from an online gig with a chat window and emojis. It's almost heart-breaking seeing an artist perform to an empty venue, absent of the feedback on which they thrive. That said, I am absolutely thankful for the response by creatives to ...well... get creative, providing much needed catharsis for us and I imagine, themselves. For the music, dance, art, spoken word and everything in between, Thank You.
LOOK TO THE HORIZON, NOT THE SKY
With the planned return to relative normality, I feel a sense of cautious optimism and that, for now, is enough. Seeing events companies recruiting again and some events in the planning for later in the year, provides much hope. Here's to a safe return to spaces and faces that inspire awe.
Until then, here's a reminder of what live events looked like back in 2019. I think may have even been my most recent event! Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival
