Recently Adam and I embarked on a trip in our aged camper van, with borrowed bikes strapped to her back, to the wilds of north Cornwall.
First day, bikes at the ready, we casually strapped a basket to the front of my bike. Now, me being me, I don't own a rucksack or any such practical vessel for phones, keys, money and water, I have a cute little basket. This basket is probably better used for swinging from one's arm in a rustic French market.
On this occasion, bungee cords seemed best for fixing said basket to my bike. Off we went with a sprinkling of eau de francais.
The first bump and the whole lot went - ping! Bungees flying in all directions like an breakdancing octopus and the contents of the basket was dumped on the road. To avoid grinding my phone into the tarmac I slammed on the anchors and with a bone deep thunk - I felt my back go.
The remaining three days consisted mainly of me lying flat in the camper with the exception of tentative evening shuffles to the beach because I wasn't not going to watch the sunsets together sharing a bottle of rose. Priorities.
I am a great believer in the old adage ‘Done is better then perfect’ and getting a business or project off the ground sometimes means there are bungee cords holding it all together. Or sellotape. Or superglue. Whatever is to hand really. But once you get past that ‘I think this could be something’ stage I urge you to go back and fix the basket on properly/get that client management system in place/pay someone to do your branding and website/strategise your marketing/do a financial forecast. (you get the idea). Because if you leave these things, at some point you'll end up paralysed (perhaps in a camper van in Cornwall) by overwhelm with unable to move.
P.S. It's already mid November, that went fast! So do my one-to-one spots for mentoring, If you're starting to panic that you've got nothing BUT baskets spilling all over the road and want help to get everything firmly in place for 2023, I have two spaces left for Business Booster Sessions in December. Two hours, you and me, mapping out how to smash your goals. Link in my bio to grab yours.
